What is MR3?

The MR3 is a powered studio monitor speaker with built-in amplification from Edifier. The maker says it suits home studios, video editing and daily listening.

It is a two-way design with a 3.5-inch mid-low driver and a 1-inch silk dome tweeter. The tweeter has a dimpled waveguide intended to shape high-frequency spread. Frequency response is listed as 52 Hz to 40 kHz.

A Texas Instruments Class-D amplifier is used, working up to 24 bit/96 kHz. Output is 18 W x 2 (RMS) and maximum SPL is 92.5 dB (peak at 1 m), described as suited to near-field listening.

Rear knobs for high and low, plus the EDIFIER ConneX app, offer room compensation. Inputs are balanced TRS, RCA, AUX and Bluetooth 5.4, and there is a headphone output.

Dimpled tweeter waveguide

A waveguide with fine dimples around the tweeter aims at a more extended high range and more consistent sound across a wider listening area. It may help those whose head position shifts at a desk.

52 Hz to 40 kHz response

The listed response runs 52 Hz to 40 kHz, a wide high end for a compact monitor. Bass reaches only as far as the size allows, so whether to add a subwoofer may depend on your room.

24 bit/96 kHz amplifier stage

The maker says both the analog front end and the Class-D amplifier are set to work at 24 bit/96 kHz. The speaker is also Hi-Res Audio certified.

Room compensation controls

Rear knobs cut or boost above 10 kHz and around 125 Hz by up to 6 dB, and the app adds low cutoff, acoustic space and desktop control. These may help in rooms where placement near walls or on a desk adds bass.

Wide input selection

Balanced TRS, RCA, 3.5 mm AUX, Bluetooth 5.4 and a headphone output are provided, so an interface via TRS and a phone via Bluetooth can both stay connected.

MDF cabinet and companion app

MDF is used to reduce distortion and resonance. The ConneX app provides playback control (Bluetooth only), sound effect switching, room compensation and the manual.
