What is Ircam Verb?

Ircam Verb sits halfway between a reverb and a spatialization engine. The official text presents it as state-of-the-art room acoustics simulation and reverberation, bringing multichannel reverb into Quad, Ambisonics and Dolby Atmos deliverables as well as stereo.

It uses perceptual models from IRCAM, the French research centre, aiming for an intuitive experience. Input and output reach 16 channels, and Pro Tools HD is noted with Dolby Atmos and 3rd-order bus support.

The reverb's time structure is displayed and adjustable as Early, Cluster and Reverb, each with its own three-band filter, plus controls such as Room Size, Reverb Start and Reverb Gain.

The current Ircam Verb license also includes the two-channel Ircam Verb Session version, so lighter stereo-oriented work is covered too.

Up to 16 channels and Dolby Atmos support

Quad, Ambisonics and Dolby Atmos projects are supported; Pro Tools HD is listed with Dolby Atmos and 3rd-order bus support.

Channel routing matrix

I/O channels can be routed to match the control-room monitor setup, useful in surround and multichannel environments.

Early / Cluster / Reverb time structure

Early Shape, Early Min/Max and Distribution, and Cluster Min/Max/Distribution let you design how reflections appear.

Three-band filters and decay time

Room, Early, Cluster and Reverb each have three-band filters, and decay time can be set relative to high, mid and low bands.

Creative reverb options

Options include Infinite (freezing the reverb), Air Absorption, Modal Density, Panning, Width and Diffuseness.

Density setting

A High density setting switches between the standard and high-density reverb engines.

A/B morphing and automation

The slider blends A and B settings and can be recorded as host automation.

Immersive mixes such as Dolby Atmos

It may be considered where reverb must be built around a space.

Post-production

It could add room acoustics to dialogue and effects.

Stereo mixes

The bundled 2-channel version might be lighter to use.

Sound design

Options like Infinite could produce long sustained spaces.

Who it may suit

  • People working in immersive audio
  • Those who want to design early reflections in detail
  • Users looking for reverb for picture work
  • Anyone who also wants a 2-channel version for stereo

Good to know before you buy
