9 Creative Effect Plug-ins for Home Recording: Compared by Purpose (2026)

Creative effect plug-ins move sound in time with the rhythm, chop it finely (glitch) or break it into grains and rebuild it (granular). You use them to add movement and change to loops, synths and vocals. The kinds of effects included, how movement is made (LFO, step, random) and functions that move with the sound (such as sidechain) differ by product.

This list compares 9 creative effect plug-ins on 3 criteria: number of effects, ways to create movement, reacting to sound. Scores are decided by how well each product serves its purpose, using the conditions for each criterion, and the basis is official manufacturer information. Price is not part of the score.

Tier list by rank

Ranks are based on the manufacturer's official features and specifications, not on sound quality. Within a row, products are ordered by score. The basis is explained in How we rate specifications.

Tier table by criterion

Products with the same overall rank can have different strengths. Click a column heading to sort by the rank on that criterion, and use it when you choose by the feature you want.

Click a column heading to sort by that criterion (click again to reverse). Each cell shows the score (1 to 5) on that criterion as 5 = S, 4 = A, 3 = B, 2 or lower = C. A dash means the criterion is not scored. This is a rating of the manufacturer's official features and specifications, not of sound quality. See How we rate specifications.

How to choose a creative effect plug-in

Diagram of how instrument plug-ins work: MIDI keyboard, DAW, instrument plug-in, instrument sound
Figure: SoundBounty

What do you want to do?

To move sound in time with the tempo, rhythm types (Movement, ShaperBox) suit you; for glitch and chopping effects, step types (Effectrix); and to rebuild a sound into a different ambience, granular (Portal).

Sidechain

If you want to make movement like “sidechain”, where the bass volume drops in time with the kick, choose a product with external sidechain or a function that reacts to the attack of a sound.

Number of presets

Every product lets you start from presets. Checking the effect with presets first and then drawing your own movement helps you get used to it quickly.

A word on each product

Prices in the headings are regular prices in US dollars shown on Plugin Boutique on October 10, 2026. They are not part of the score.

ShaperBox 3 (rank A, $99)

Cableguys’ ShaperBox 3 is a plug-in that uses LFOs you draw to move 11 kinds of effects, such as volume, filter, distortion and pitch. It has Audio Triggering, which moves effects in time with the attack (the start) of a sound, and an external sidechain (a feature that moves an effect to match the sound of another track).

Effectrix 2 (rank A, $129)

Sugar Bytes’ Effectrix 2 is a plug-in that arranges 14 effects on a 32-step sequencer to make glitch and chopping effects. It has more than 400 presets (ready-made settings).

Turnado (rank A)

Sugar Bytes’ Turnado is a multi-effect from Sugar Bytes in which each of eight knobs is assigned a different effect, so you can reshape sound in real time. In Expert mode you can set 24 effects in detail.

Movement (rank B, $149)

Output’s Movement is an effect that moves sound in time with the rhythm. Its four rhythm engines can move filters, delays, distortion and more in time with the tempo of a song. It has more than 300 presets (ready-made settings).

Stutter Edit 2 (rank B)

iZotope’s Stutter Edit 2 is a plug-in from iZotope that creates stutter effects, which chop up the sound, with a single button. With presets (ready-made settings) called “Gestures” and 11 effects, you can quickly build glitchy edits.

Effect Rack (rank B)

Soundtoys’ Effect Rack is a multi-effect that lines up 14 Soundtoys effects in one plug-in, and lets you build the order of connection freely. Hundreds of presets (ready-made settings) are included.

Portal (rank C, $149)

Output’s Portal is a granular effect that breaks a sound into tiny grains and rebuilds it. It can make a new ring while staying close to the shape of the original sound, and it has more than 250 presets (ready-made settings).

Crystallizer (rank C)

Soundtoys’ Crystallizer is a pitch-shifting and reverse-echo plug-in based on the reverse-shift effect of a classic unit of the past. It turns a simple chord into a sweeping landscape of sound.

HalfTime (rank C)

Cableguys’ HalfTime is a plug-in from Cableguys that specializes in the half-speed effect. It can turn a beat into something slow and dark.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Can I try them for free?

Many makers offer trial versions. Check on the official site whether a trial is available before you buy.

Q. Can I use them on vocals?

Yes. They suit accents in an arrangement, such as chopping the ends of phrases or rebuilding the ambience.

Q. Are they heavy on the CPU?

Layering several effects can make them heavy. When it is heavy, it is reassuring to render the effect to audio before you use it.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: adding movement and change to loops, synths and vocals. Scores follow the conditions in the table above. "Reacting to sound" is a criterion that answers the common search for "sidechain". The basis is the manufacturer's product description on the Plugin Boutique product page. Sound quality has not been compared by ear, so it is not scored. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent. The "OBS (streaming)" column in the table shows whether the official page lists the VST2 format that the streaming software OBS Studio can use (○). OBS does not support the VST3 format. It is not part of the score.

The thinking behind scores and ranks is summarized in How we rate specifications. We add products in order.
