What is MDR-EX800ST?

The MDR-EX800ST is an in-ear monitor developed for stage use. Sony says it was developed jointly with Sony Music Studios and is intended for performers who monitor their own sound.

It uses a large 16 mm dynamic driver (dome type, CCAW) which Sony says aims for a natural frequency response like that of studio monitor speakers. The frequency range is listed as 3 – 28,000 Hz.

As with the MDR-CD900ST monitor headphone used in recording work, Sony says the sound was adjusted by careful manual tuning to keep unit-to-unit variation small. It is a professional-use product and repairs are paid.

Flexible ear hangers can be shaped to the ear, and the maximum input is 500 mW. The cord detaches from the body, making it easier to replace after an accident such as a break.

Large 16 mm driver

It carries a large 16 mm dynamic driver for an in-ear model. Sony says resolution is good and it suits monitoring, which may help when checking your own playing.

Know-how from studio monitors

Sony says know-how from developing the MDR-CD900ST went into it. Manual tuning is said to limit variation between units, which may matter if several pairs are used by a band.

Flexible ear hangers

The hangers can be shaped to the ear to keep the fit stable even on a busy stage. The design suits cables routed over and behind the ear.

500 mW maximum input

The official maximum input is 500 mW, designed with live environments in mind. It is still wise to raise volume gradually when connecting.

Detachable cord

The cord is removed by turning a screw-type ring. Sony frames this as a precaution against breakage and notes routine detaching is not intended.

Y-type litz cord

The cord is about 1.6 m Y-type litz wire, 1.9 mm thick, with a gold-plated L-shaped stereo mini plug, suited to connecting to bodypacks or monitor systems.
