What is Soft Limit Native Plugin – Analog Tape Emulation?

Soft Limit brings the Soft Limit function, long built into Apogee converters, to the plug-in world for the first time. The distributor page describes it as an analog tape emulation.

It originates from the AD-500, released in 1991, which placed an analog circuit ahead of the A/D stage to round off transients and add harmonic warmth. The page explains that nearly all later Apogee A/D converters, from the AD-8000 and Symphony I/O to the latest Duet 3, include it.

The original circuit had a fixed threshold, but the plug-in lets you adjust it down to -18 dBFS. Auto Makeup, Drive, Output and up to 16x oversampling are added as well.

Input, output and reduction meters show how Soft Limit is shaping the signal. Supported formats are Audio Unit, VST 2, VST 3 and AAX Native.

Adjustable threshold

The threshold, fixed in the original circuit, can be lowered to -18 dBFS. Tailoring the effect per source may let you try it on tracks that behave differently, such as drums and vocals.

Auto Makeup

When on, it compensates the gain as you lower the threshold. This may help you judge tonal changes without being misled by level differences while dialing in settings.

Drive (±18 dB)

This trims the level ahead of the Soft Limit stage within ±18 dB. Changing how hard you hit the stage may let you explore a crunchier character.

Output (±18 dB)

The plug-in output can be trimmed by ±18 dB to suit the next stage in your DAW. It may be handy for managing the level you pass to following plug-ins.

Up to 16x oversampling

Up to 16x oversampling helps avoid issues such as aliasing. The page says CPU use stays efficient and latency very low even at the top setting.

Input, output and reduction meters

Accurate meters show how much Soft Limit is working. They may help when you want visual confirmation in addition to listening.

What is included and system requirements

  • Soft Limit Native Plugin (analog tape emulation)
  • Formats: Audio Unit / VST 2 / VST 3 / AAX Native
  • OS: macOS 10.14.6 or later / Windows 10 or later

How to use it

  1. After purchase, get the installer and run it.
  2. Launch your DAW and rescan plug-ins.
  3. Insert Soft Limit on the track or bus you want to treat.
  4. Lower the threshold gradually and watch the reduction meter to see how it acts.
  5. Turn on Auto Makeup to compare tone without level differences.
  6. Change Drive to see how the crunch develops.
  7. Set Output so the level suits the next stage.
  8. Raise the oversampling factor as needed, keeping CPU load in mind.

Rounding off drum and percussion edges

Since it rounds transients, you may try it lightly on sources with sharp attacks to hear the tonal change.

Softening vocal peaks

You may try it when you want to tame vocal peaks while adding warmth.

Finishing on a mix bus or master

Applying it lightly across the whole mix could be a way to explore cohesion.

Who it may suit

  • People who want to try the Apogee Soft Limit approach as a plug-in
  • Home recorders and DTM users who want tape-style rounding
  • People who want detailed control over drive and oversampling

Good to know before you buy

  • System requirements: macOS 10.14.6 or later / Windows 10 or later, 4 GB RAM or more (8 GB+ recommended).
  • Your DAW must support one of the formats: Audio Unit, VST 2, VST 3 or AAX Native.
  • The original is an analog circuit ahead of A/D conversion; the plug-in adds features such as an adjustable threshold.
