An introduction to FLUX:: Syrah, based on information from the maker and distributors: what it does, how to use it and who it may suit. It is not scored.

Syrah is designed to react in real-time to the nature of the input signal, making it an extremely versatile compressor with the ability to adapt to anything from individual sources to a complete mix.

What is Syrah?

Syrah is an adaptive compressor that reacts in real time to the nature of the input signal. The official description says it is built on the algorithms behind Alchemist and Solera and can adapt to anything from individual sources to a complete mix.

The controls are kept focused for quick setup. The Mode setting offers Dynamic Soft, Dynamic Deep and Static; in the dynamic modes several parameters vary together according to the audio analysis.

More creative controls include Boost (increases the overall intensity), Thickness (enhances low-level frequencies to fatten the sound) and Inverse (inverts the final gain envelope). The maker calls it a creative adaptive-dynamics processor.

It supports M/S processing so mid and side components can be treated separately, and an LCD-style display shows the waveform and gain envelope.

Adaptive dynamics

Processing changes automatically with the analysed material, which might cut the effort of re-dialling per source.

Mode: Dynamic Soft / Dynamic Deep / Static

In the two dynamic modes a range of parameters follows the audio analysis, aiming for a result closer to the original.

Boost, Thickness, Inverse

Boost intensifies everything, Thickness fattens by enhancing low-level frequencies and Inverse flips the final gain envelope, which could suit creative effects.

Dry Mix with gain compensation

Dry/Wet with optional gain compensation allows parallel processing or blending in original peaks.

M/S stereo operation

Mid and Side can be processed separately; the maker mentions dynamically increasing room impression or boosting the centre. M/S Width adjusts stereo width.

LCD waveform display

Input waveform, output waveform and gain envelope can be shown, with scroll speed and freeze options.

Peak limiter and 16 channels

A discrete peak limiter sits at the end of the chain, and input/output supports up to 16 channels.

What is included and system requirements

  • Syrah
  • LCD waveform display
  • M/S control and discrete peak limiter
  • System: Windows 10/11 (64-bit); macOS 10.14.6 Mojave or later, Apple Silicon (M1-M3) supported. An iLok.com account is required (the iLok USB key is not required)
  • Two preset/parameter slots (A and B) plus a morphing slider between them, available to host automation
  • Open Sound Control (OSC) support
  • The FLUX:: shop advertises a free 30-day trial

How to use it

  1. Insert Syrah on a track or bus.
  2. Choose a Mode (for example Dynamic Soft first).
  3. Adjust input gain to set how much processing occurs.
  4. Use Boost to set the overall intensity.
  5. Try Thickness to see whether more low-level weight is wanted.
  6. Blend in the dry signal with Dry Mix if needed.
  7. If using M/S, check how Mid and Side are processed.
  8. Watch the gain envelope on the LCD and compare with A/B.

Quick compression setup

It might be tried first, before detailed per-track tuning.

Drum or mix bus

Being adaptive, it could follow changes within a song.

Creative effects

Inverse and Thickness may open unusual compression textures.

Mastering

It may be worth trying with M/S processing.

Who it may suit

  • People looking for a focused adaptive compressor
  • Those who want to reduce per-source setup
  • Users wanting to experiment with creative compression
  • Anyone who wants to compress mid and side separately

Good to know before you buy

  • An iLok.com user account is required (the iLok USB key is not required).
  • Windows is 64-bit only and needs a graphics card with OpenGL 2.0 support; USB displays are listed as unsupported in the official specifications.
  • The standard FLUX:: license does not include VS3 (for Pyramix / Ovation); it is sold separately by Merging Technologies.
  • The shop's Syrah page shows a limited-time offer notice (until October 31).
  • Also included in the All Plugins Pack and Complete Pack subscriptions.

How it differs from similar products

We do not pick a winner; the official figures are placed side by side.

FLUX:: Solera

Syrah is an adaptive compressor with up to 16 channels at $99 (shop listing). Solera is a full-band unit with compressor, expander, de-compressor and de-expander in parallel, up to 8 channels, at $149.
