Next-generation de-esser, for vocals, instruments and more…
— Solid State Logic official site
What is SSL DeEss?
SSL DeEss is a de-esser from Solid State Logic. It is meant to reduce sibilant 'ess' and 'shh' sounds and harsh upper-mid buildup, and it is presented for instruments as well as vocals.
Its key idea is a relative threshold algorithm. Input level changes earlier in the FX chain are designed not to alter the de-esser's response, and quiet and loud sibilant events are treated alike.
You can mix SPLIT and BROADBAND processing modes and switch filters independently to audition bandpass or shelf behavior. AUTO LISTEN automatically auditions the signal when related controls change.
Presets are provided for Tenor, Alto, and Soprano vocals and for instruments. It is a universal binary with native Apple M1 support.
Relative threshold
The response is designed not to change when input level changes. Takes recorded at different levels may need less re-setting.
Brighten control
A control to restore the high end after de-essing. It can be adjusted if the result feels too dark.
SPLIT and BROADBAND
You can blend band-only reduction with full-range reduction to search for a natural result to suit the source.
Independent filter switching
Filters can be switched independently to audition bandpass and shelf approaches.
Waveform display and AUTO LISTEN
The waveform visualiser shows gain reduction across quiet and loud passages, and AUTO LISTEN helps you audition the target.
Mid/side processing
Processing can target only the mid or side component, which may help when sibilance sits in one part of a stereo source.
Oversampling and lookahead
Optional modes for higher-quality response.
