10 Vocal Processing Plug-ins for Cover Songs: Compared by Purpose (2026)

A vocal processing plug-in puts the processing you use to finish a vocal, such as EQ, compressor, de-esser and reverb, into one. It suits making a starting point when you do not know what to apply in what order for a cover song. Here we compare the three editions of iZotope Nectar 4, plus sonible’s prime:vocal and smart:chain, for the purpose of quickly tidying a cover-song vocal.

This list compares 10 vocal processing plug-ins on 4 criteria: ai groundwork, cleaning up the recording, fine adjustment, pitch correction and harmony. Scores are decided by how well each product serves its purpose, using the conditions for each criterion, and the basis is official manufacturer information. Price is not part of the score.

Picks by purpose

  • If you want a complete set of vocal processing: Nectar 4 Standard (rank A). Besides the AI starting point, you can touch each process directly, and Melodyne essential comes with it.
  • If the room sound and noise of your home recording bother you: prime:vocal (rank B). Removing noise and room echo and tidying the sound are all in one.
  • If you want to tidy the whole mix including the backing: smart:chain (rank B). Eight AI processes and automatic adjustment of the volume of the whole song.
  • If you first want to leave it to AI: Nectar 4 Elements (rank C). You can use the Vocal Assistant at a reasonable price.

  • $150 and over: Nectar 4 Advanced (rank S, $299). The highest-scoring product in this price range.

Tier list by rank

Ranks are based on the manufacturer's official features and specifications, not on sound quality. Within a row, products are ordered by score. The basis is explained in How we rate specifications.

Tier table by criterion

Products with the same overall rank can have different strengths. Click a column heading to sort by the rank on that criterion, and use it when you choose by the feature you want.

Click a column heading to sort by that criterion (click again to reverse). Each cell shows the score (1 to 5) on that criterion as 5 = S, 4 = A, 3 = B, 2 or lower = C. A dash means the criterion is not scored. This is a rating of the manufacturer's official features and specifications, not of sound quality. See How we rate specifications.

How to choose a vocal processing plug-in

Before and after compression: loud peaks are held down so the volume is more even
Figure: SoundBounty

How much do you want one product to cover?

A vocal processing plug-in bundles the processing a vocal needs, such as EQ, compressor, de-esser and reverb. What you should choose depends on whether you want to finish with one product, or leave only the preparation to it and adjust the rest yourself.

Does it have AI suggestions?

With a product where AI listens to the voice and suggests the processing settings, you can quickly make a starting point even if you are not used to mixing. The good way to use it is not to take the suggestion as it is, but to adjust from there to your taste.

Does it include tidying the recording (noise and echo)?

Some editions also include processing that reduces noise and room echo. If the echo of your home recording bothers you, choosing one with that function saves you from preparing separate software.

A word on each product

Prices in the headings are regular prices in US dollars shown on Plugin Boutique on October 10, 2026. They are not part of the score.

smart:chain (rank B, $179)

sonible’s smart:chain is a channel strip that puts eight AI processors into one plug-in, including EQ, compressor, a processor that tames harsh resonance, a gate, automatic level adjustment and saturation (a faint distortion, as if passed through analog gear). It also has a feature that automatically adjusts the level balance of several tracks across the whole song.

prime:vocal (rank B, $179)

sonible’s prime:vocal is software that uses AI trained specifically on vocals to remove hum, mechanical noise and the ring of a room, and to tidy up the balance and dynamics of the sound. It works as a standalone app and as an ARA plug-in (beta).

Evoke (rank C)

Minimal Audio’s vocal effect Evoke uses “resynthesis”, which takes a vocal apart and rebuilds it, to make leads, harmonies and processed voices. It includes pitch correction (including a hard-tune style), harmonies of up to four voices and 15 character modes.

Pulsar Vocal Studio (rank C)

Pulsar Audio’s vocal processing plug-in Pulsar Vocal Studio puts the processing a vocal mix needs into one plug-in: compression, EQ, saturation (a faint distortion, as if the sound had passed through analog gear), a de-esser, a gate, reverb, delay and more. It has 11 FX modes and more than 80 presets (settings prepared in advance).

Vocal Rider (rank C)

Waves’ vocal processing plug-in Vocal Rider automatically raises and lowers the level of a vocal to match a target level you set. It keeps the level steady without squashing the sound hard with a compressor, and the result can be written as automation.

CLA Vocals (rank C)

Waves’ vocal processing plug-in CLA Vocals puts six vocal treatments favored by the mixer Chris Lord-Alge under faders. Low end, high end, compression, reverb, delay and pitch each have three variations to choose from.

Maserati VX1 (rank C)

Waves’ vocal processing plug-in Maserati VX1 was made with the mixer Tony Maserati. You choose one of three Contours (treatments with different moods) and add compression, low and high end, and delay and reverb with a few knobs.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Can I mix with a vocal processing plug-in alone?

You can do almost all the processing of the vocal with one. But the volume balance with the backing and the final volume of the whole song are separate work.

Q. Is it fine to use presets?

Yes. Presets are handy as a starting point. Voices and recording environments differ from person to person, so after choosing a preset, adjust muddiness, harshness and volume swings little by little.

Q. Should I buy a de-esser and reverb separately?

If they are included in the vocal processing plug-in, that is enough at first. When you want to adjust in more detail, adding dedicated plug-ins one by one avoids waste.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: quickly getting a cover-song vocal into a state ready to mix. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "AI groundwork" counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information. Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent. The "OBS (streaming)" column in the table shows whether the official page lists the VST2 format that the streaming software OBS Studio can use (○). OBS does not support the VST3 format. It is not part of the score.

The thinking behind scores and ranks is summarized in How we rate specifications. We add products in order.
