Edifier’s MR4 and MR5 are monitor speakers sold as a left-and-right pair. The MR4 is a 4-inch 2-way, and the MR5 is a 3-way that adds a midrange speaker to a 5-inch woofer. In this article we compare the 2 models using only the specifications the manufacturer publishes, and rank them on the same criteria as the other 13 monitor speakers on this site.

In short: which one to choose
- MR4 (rank B): a monitor speaker with a 4-inch woofer (sold as a pair). Strong on ease of connecting and ease of placement.
- MR5 (rank S): a monitor speaker with a 5-inch woofer (sold as a pair). Strong on adjusting to the room, ease of connecting and ease of placement.
The highest score among the 2 models is MR5 (rank S, average 4.3). But the model you need depends on how many things you record at once and which features you use. You do not need to choose a higher model for inputs, outputs or features you will not use.
Main features of the Edifier MR series
MR4: an affordable pair of monitors
The MR4 is a pair of monitor speakers using a 4-inch woofer and a 1-inch silk dome tweeter. Its sound characteristics are said to have been tuned dozens of times in Edifier’s acoustic lab, based on measurements by Germany’s KLIPPEL.
MR4: monitor mode and music mode
A single knob on the front controls volume, power and sound mode. By double-clicking the knob you switch between “monitor mode” for production and “music mode” for everyday listening (red for production, green for music).
MR5: three ways, and finer room adjustment
The MR5 is a 3-way with a 5-inch woofer, a 3.75-inch midrange and a 1-inch tweeter, and plays 46 Hz to 40 kHz. Knobs on the back adjust the highs (above 10 kHz) and the bass (around 125 Hz) by ±6 dB, and the app “EDIFIER ConneX” can also cut bass and correct for placement and desk reflections.
Many ways to connect
The MR4 has TRS (balanced), RCA and 3.5 mm AUX inputs and a front headphone jack. The MR5 adds an XLR input and Bluetooth 6.0 with LDAC support (two devices at the same time).
Where it is useful
- Connecting a computer, smartphone and audio interface to one pair of speakers
- Using the same speakers for production and everyday music listening (the MR4’s mode switch)
- Wanting to tidy the sound even on a desk or near a wall (the MR5’s app adjustment)
Differences in specifications (comparison table)
| Model | Rank | Room for low frequencies | Adjusting to the room | Ease of connecting | Ease of placement |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MR4 | B (3.0) | 4-inch (2 points) | 0 of 3 (1 point) | 4 of 7 (4 points) | 140 mm (5 points) |
| MR5 | S (4.3) | 5-inch (3 points) | 3 of 3 (5 points) | 6 of 7 (5 points) | 159 mm (4 points) |
How we score (Monitor speakers)
| Criterion | Basis | 5 pt | 4 pt | 3 pt | 2 pt | 1 pt |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Room for low frequencies | Woofer size | ≥8 | ≥6.5 | ≥5 | ≥4 | <4 |
| Adjusting to the room | High and low frequency controls, DSP or app adjustment | All 3 | 2 | 1 | — | None |
| Ease of connecting | Types of input and output jacks | 5 to 7 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 or fewer |
| Ease of placement | Width (one speaker) | ≤140 | ≤160 | ≤190 | ≤220 | >220 |
Scored only on the body specifications published by the manufacturer. Price is not part of the score. Manufacturers measure low-frequency response under different conditions (-3 dB, -6 dB, -10 dB and so on), so it is hard to compare side by side. The score therefore uses the size of the woofer (the speaker for low sounds), and the published low-frequency limit is shown in the table together with its condition. Amplifier power is also written differently (rated, RMS and so on), so treat it as a rough guide; it is shown in the table for reference and is not part of the score. Ease of placement is decided by width, with a desktop in mind.
