Summary

Among the 18 monitor speakers, KH 80 DSP is rank B. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and B is third from the top. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5) gives 3.0.

Strengths

  • Adjusting to the room (2 of 3, 4 points): You can adjust the sound to where you place them and to the room.
  • Ease of placement (154 mm, 4 points): It is small and easy to place on a desk.

Things to keep in mind

  • Room for low frequencies (4-inch, 2 points): The woofer is small, so checking the low end is modest.
  • Ease of connecting (2 of 7, 2 points): It has few kinds of jacks.

Who it suits: judging from the specifications, it suits people who want to adjust the sound to where they place the speakers and to the room; people who want to place them in limited space on a desk.

Room for low frequencies: 2 / 5

The size of the woofer (the speaker that makes low sounds). The bigger it is, the more room there is for the low end.

KH 80 DSP: 4-inch. That is a modest rating among the products we compared. The woofer is small, so checking the low end is modest.

Adjusting to the room: 4 / 5

Whether you can adjust the lows and highs to where you place them and to the room.

KH 80 DSP: 2 of 3. That is a high rating among the products we compared. You can adjust the sound to where you place them and to the room.

Ease of connecting: 2 / 5

How many kinds of jacks it has for connecting equipment.

Scored only on the body specifications published by the manufacturer. Price is not part of the score. Manufacturers measure low-frequency response under different conditions (-3 dB, -6 dB, -10 dB and so on), so it is hard to compare side by side. The score therefore uses the size of the woofer (the speaker for low sounds), and the published low-frequency limit is shown in the table together with its condition. Amplifier power is also written differently (rated, RMS and so on), so treat it as a rough guide; it is shown in the table for reference and is not part of the score. Ease of placement is decided by width, with a desktop in mind.

Before you buy

  • It is sold one speaker at a time. You need two for stereo. When comparing prices, think of the cost of two.
  • The inputs are XLR, TRS (phone jack). Check the shape of the cable that connects to the output of your audio interface (most use TRS phone jacks).
  • The width is 154 mm. Besides room for two speakers, check that you can leave a little space between the speakers and the wall.
