Valhalla DSP ValhallaPlate reverb plug-in: features and spec-based rating

Valhalla DSP’s ValhallaPlate is a reverb that recreates, with 12 algorithms, the sound of the steel-plate reverbs used in studios in the 1960s and 70s. With few knobs, such as DECAY, SIZE and WIDTH, it makes a warm, dense reverb.

A reverb adds the sound of a room or hall to a recording. For vocals, it adds space and helps the voice sit in the mix with the backing track.

In this article we compare ValhallaPlate with 12 reverb plug-ins and rate how well it serves its purpose on three criteria. The basis is official manufacturer information.

Comparison table of reverb and delay: how each sounds, its effect and where it is used

TOC

Summary

Among the 12 reverb plug-ins, ValhallaPlate is rank A. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and A is second from the top. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5, with the one criterion that matters most for the purpose counted double) gives 3.5.

Strengths

  • Vocal-friendly sounds (4 points): it has the reverb sounds commonly used on vocals, so it is easy to use on a voice.

Who it suits: people who want to add the standard plate sound to vocals at a reasonable price.

Main features of ValhallaPlate

12 modes that recreate plates

MODE lets you choose among 12 algorithms, such as Chrome, Steel, Brass, Cobalt and Aluminum. The first four are slightly metallic sounds made by listening to real plate reverbs. There are also dense modes with less of a metallic sound, and modes between a plate and a chamber (a reverberation room).

Few knobs to decide

The manufacturer explains that, following the few knobs of a real plate, it was designed to be easy to use. DECAY (the length of the reverb), SIZE (the size of the plate), WIDTH (the stereo width), PREDELAY and MIX are the basics, and the aim was for any setting to sound good. There is also a function that fixes MIX, for use on a send.

EQ and wobble for the reverb

There are shelving EQs on the low side and the high side, so you can make the reverb a little brighter or warmer. This EQ is not inside the reverb, so the length of the reverb does not change. The wobble of MOD Rate and Depth can also soften the metallic character that is typical of plates.

Longer and larger than the real thing

DECAY and SIZE can be set to ranges that real plates do not have, so you can also make long reverbs and smoother sounds.

Where it is useful

  • Adding the standard plate sound to a vocal with Chrome or Steel
  • Setting SIZE larger for a smooth sound with less metallic character
  • Raising MOD a little to make a spacious reverb for synths

Rating by criterion

Vocal-friendly sounds: 4 / 5

We check whether it has the reverb types vocalists use most (plate, hall and room).

You can choose from 12 algorithms based on real plate reverbs. There are no dedicated room or hall modes.

Easy to blend: 3 / 5

We check whether you can adjust the reverb so it does not get in the way of the voice and sits well with the backing track.

There are low and high shelving EQs applied to the reverb, and a stereo pre-delay.

Speed: 3 / 5

We check whether it has features that get you to the sound you want quickly, such as automatic settings or controls that work by feel, like distance.

It has few knobs: you choose among 12 types with MODE and adjust with DECAY and SIZE.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: adding a natural sense of space to a vocal and blending it into the backing track. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "Vocal-friendly sounds" counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information. Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent. The "OBS (streaming)" column in the table shows whether the official page lists the VST2 format that the streaming software OBS Studio can use (○). OBS does not support the VST3 format. It is not part of the score.
