Xfer Records Serum 2 synthesizer: features and spec-based rating

Xfer Records’ Serum 2 is a synthesizer with five kinds of oscillators (the part that makes the waveform that is the source of the sound): wavetable (a method that makes sound by switching between waveforms of different shapes), multisample, sample, granular and spectral. It includes more than 626 presets and 288 wavetables, and also has eight macros, an arpeggiator and a clip sequencer.

A synthesizer is an instrument that makes sound electronically. You use it for the melodies, accompaniment and sound effects of a song.

In this article we compare Serum 2 with 13 synthesizers and rate how well it serves its purpose on three criteria. The basis is official manufacturer information.

Summary

Among the 13 synthesizers, Serum 2 is rank A. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and A is second from the top. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5, with the one criterion that matters most for the purpose counted double) gives 3.8.

Strengths

  • Range of sound design (5 points): you can make sound in several ways, which covers a wide range of tones.
  • Help with sound design (4 points): you can change a sound with simple controls even without detailed knowledge.

Who it suits: people who want to build sounds themselves, centered on wavetables.

Main features of Serum 2

Five kinds of oscillators

Each of Serum 2’s three main oscillators can be set to Wavetable, Multisample, Sample, Granular or Spectral. Multisample lets you use sounds such as orchestras, choirs, pianos and guitars recorded around the world, and it can also load sources in SFZ format. Serum 1 had two oscillators, so the range of layering has widened.

Eight macros and Hybridize

You can assign several parameters to each of the eight macros and move them together with one knob. The preset screen has Hybridize, which mixes two sounds, and you can also move the macros while listening to presets. Ratings and filters make it easier to search among many presets.

Arpeggiator and clip sequencer

Serum 2 gained an arpeggiator that lets you build patterns in detail and a clip sequencer that lets you record and arrange phrases. If you set a key and scale, what you play and the phrases can be aligned to that scale. You can even make short phrases inside the synthesizer.

Where it is useful

  • Building an EDM bass or lead from scratch with wavetables
  • Layering a Multisample piano or choir with synth sounds
  • Making a phrase from chords with the arpeggiator

Rating by criterion

Ready-to-use sounds: 3 / 5

We look at the number of presets (ready-made sounds) included from the start.

It includes more than 626 presets and 288 wavetables.

Range of sound design: 5 / 5

We look at how many sound-generation methods (ways of making sound) you can use.

It has five kinds of oscillators: wavetable, multisample, sample, granular and spectral.

Help with sound design: 4 / 5

We look at whether there are features (big knobs, randomization and so on) that let you change a sound without detailed knowledge.

It has eight macros that move several knobs together, and Hybridize on the preset screen, which mixes two sounds.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: quickly preparing sounds that suit your own songs or cover-song backing tracks in a home studio. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "Ready-to-use sounds" counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information, and the number of presets is the number written on the official page (products that do not state it get a lower score). Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent.
