FabFilter Twin 3 synthesizer: features and spec-based rating

FabFilter’s Twin 3 is an analog-style synthesizer with four oscillators (the part that makes the waveform that is the source of the sound). It has analog-style wobble (drift), 100 slots of modulation (changing a sound over time) and a preset browser you can search by tags, and its screen has been redesigned to be easy to understand.

A synthesizer is an instrument that makes sound electronically. You use it for the melodies, accompaniment and sound effects of a song.

In this article we compare Twin 3 with 13 synthesizers and rate how well it serves its purpose on three criteria. The basis is official manufacturer information.

Summary

Among the 13 synthesizers, Twin 3 is rank C. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and C is the lowest. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5, with the one criterion that matters most for the purpose counted double) gives 2.5.

Strengths

  • Help with sound design (4 points): you can change a sound with simple controls even without detailed knowledge.

Things to keep in mind

  • Ready-to-use sounds (2 points): it comes with few sounds, and you are expected to make your own.
  • Range of sound design (2 points): sound is mainly made by one method.

Who it suits: people who want a simple analog-style synthesizer with a clear screen.

Main features of Twin 3

A screen redesigned to be easy to understand

Twin 3 has a larger, simpler screen that makes it easy to follow the flow of the sound. Big Freq and Peak knobs move how the four filters work together, so one knob can change the brightness of a sound a lot. The movement of the sound is animated on screen, so you can see where you moved things.

Four oscillators with drift

There are four oscillators with drift, the slight wobble in pitch of an analog synthesizer. Ring modulation is also available for the pairs 1 and 2, and 3 and 4. For the four filters you can choose the shape and slope, and also decide their left-right position.

Modulation you attach by dragging

You can give a sound movement just by dragging a source such as an LFO or an envelope onto a knob. Up to 100 modulations can be set. It also includes effects such as reverb and delay, and an arpeggiator.

Where it is useful

  • Making a bass or lead from scratch while learning sound design
  • Using the Freq and Peak knobs to change the brightness of a pad to fit a song
  • Making a phrase with movement from chords with the arpeggiator

Rating by criterion

Ready-to-use sounds: 2 / 5

We look at the number of presets (ready-made sounds) included from the start.

It comes with few sounds, and you are expected to make your own.

If “ready-to-use sounds” matters most to you, Omnisphere 3 and Nexus 5 (5 points) are a better fit.

Range of sound design: 2 / 5

We look at how many sound-generation methods (ways of making sound) you can use.

It is a single analog-style method with four oscillators.

If “range of sound design” matters most to you, Omnisphere 3 and Nexus 5 (5 points) are a better fit.

Help with sound design: 4 / 5

We look at whether there are features (big knobs, randomization and so on) that let you change a sound without detailed knowledge.

The screen was redesigned to be larger and simpler, and big Freq and Peak knobs move the four filters together.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: quickly preparing sounds that suit your own songs or cover-song backing tracks in a home studio. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "Ready-to-use sounds" counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information, and the number of presets is the number written on the official page (products that do not state it get a lower score). Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent.
