What is Wave DX?
The Elgato Wave DX is an XLR dynamic microphone. The maker aims for detail close to a condenser while rejecting surrounding noise. It is presented for broadcast, streaming, podcast and commentary voice work.
The capsule is a dynamic type selected in cooperation with LEWITT Audio, with a cardioid pattern. The maker describes it as forgiving, so a voice can still be picked up when speaking slightly off-axis.
Inside is a pop shield made of nylon fiber between layers of foam to reduce plosives. The signal path has no circuitry, and the maker says it works with many audio interfaces without a booster.
The housing is hardened steel and the weight is about 440 g. The logo can be moved and rotated, and the swivel mount comes with 3/8 inch and 1/4 inch thread adapters, fitting common mic arms.
Cardioid dynamic capsule
It uses a capsule selected with LEWITT Audio and a pattern that rejects surrounding sound. It may help when recording voice in a noisy room.
Internal pop shield
Layers of foam and nylon fiber soften plosive breaths. You may be able to start without a separate pop filter.
Usable proximity effect
The maker says the proximity effect is optimized so bass grows as you get closer. It may suit people who shape voice weight by distance.
XLR connection without a booster
The maker says it works with many XLR interfaces without a booster. Sensitivity is 2.5 mV/Pa (-52 dBV/Pa).
Movable logo and swivel mount
The logo can be mounted on either side to face the camera. The swivel mount helps avoid cable tangles.
Wave XLR and Wave Link compatibility
The maker says Wave XLR adds Wave Link integration and Marketplace VST effects. It may appeal to people building an Elgato setup.
