What is PSA1+?

The PSA1+ is a studio boom arm from RØDE. You fix it to the edge of a desk, attach a microphone to the end, and move it where you want. It is intended for podcasts, streaming, broadcast and voice-over.

RØDE describes a parallelogram spring design that keeps the mic placement constant as the height changes and makes movement smooth. The springs are fully damped, and a neoprene arm cover reduces mechanical noise.

It supports microphones and shockmounts with a standard thread weighing from 94 g to 1.2 kg. RØDE names the NT-USB Mini, PodMic, Procaster, Podcaster and Broadcaster as examples. Cable management is built in.

Besides black and white there are red, blue, orange, pink, purple and green. Both a threaded desk mount and a padded desk clamp are included.

Parallelogram spring design

The spring structure keeps the mic placement constant as height changes, making fine adjustments easier and perhaps helping if you need to reposition mid-stream.

Quiet operation

Fully damped springs and a neoprene cover are meant to reduce metallic noise when the arm moves.

Isolation from desk noise

Rubber contact points are meant to reduce vibration from keyboard, mouse and desk. This may suit streamers bothered by typing noise.

Integrated cable management

A built-in system handles both USB and XLR cables to keep the desk tidy.

Supports 94 g to 1.2 kg

It carries standard-thread mics and shockmounts, from light USB mics to heavier broadcast mics, in upright or downward positions.

Reach and 360-degree rotation

Fully extended it reaches 940 mm and rotates 360 degrees, which may let you bring a mic out in front of a monitor.

Two mounts and colour choices

A threaded desk mount and a padded clamp are included, fitting desks up to 70 mm (clamp) or 55 mm (insert) deep, in several colours.

What is included and system requirements

  • PSA1+ arm
  • Threaded desk mount
  • Padded desk clamp
  • Documentation

How to use it

  1. Measure the desk edge and check whether the clamp or insert fits.
  2. Fix the base to the desk with the mount or clamp.
  3. Attach the mic or shockmount to the end of the arm.
  4. Route the mic cable through the cable management.
  5. Pull the arm out and set height and angle so the mic is at your mouth.
  6. Tighten the locking nuts to fix the angle.
  7. Fold the arm toward the back of the desk when not in use.

Streaming and gaming

When keyboard noise bothers you, the arm may let you hold the mic away from the desk.

Podcast and radio recording

It may make it easier to keep the mic close to your mouth while watching a screen.

Voice-over and home recording

Lifting the mic off the desk may reduce desk vibration reaching it.

Replacing a desk stand for a USB mic

Moving a USB mic onto an arm may free up desk space.

Who it may suit

  • People who want to reposition the mic freely for streaming or recording
  • People who want to keep desk vibration and typing noise out of the mic
  • People who need an arm that carries heavier mics
  • People who want to colour-match their desk

Good to know before you buy

  • Microphones under 94 g or over 1.2 kg fall outside RØDE's stated range.
  • Desks thicker than 70 mm (clamp) or 55 mm (insert) cannot be used.
  • Mounting uses a standard thread; some mics need a shockmount sold separately.
  • The arm itself weighs 1.52 kg.
