Summary

Among the 10 drum instrument plug-ins, BFD3.5 is rank A. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and A is second from the top. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5, with the one criterion that matters most for the purpose counted double) gives 4.0.

Strengths

  • Realism and depth (4 points): you can shape the drum sound in detail.
  • Range of kits (5 points): there are many kits to choose from for each genre.

Who it suits: people who want to shape the sound of live drums in detail, from choosing a kit to microphones and tuning.

Main features of BFD3.5

Shape each drum in detail

The drum editor in BFD3.5 has Tech, Model and Mic sections, so you can change the tuning, damping and microphone combination for each drum. The manufacturer explains that you can also adjust pitch for each velocity. It is useful when you want to fine-tune the sound of live drums to suit a song.

Modeled tom resonance

It has a feature that adds the resonance of the toms and bleed (sound leaking into other microphones) by modeling, so the whole kit blends together. The manufacturer’s point is that the sound does not simply play back recordings but changes to suit the state of the drums you have put together. There is also a mechanism that expresses the swell of a cymbal’s decay.

Mixer and effects

The built-in mixer has 48 kinds of effects, including compression, filters, EQ and reverb. You can use an external signal as a sidechain, and you can send each channel to a separate output, so you can also process the drums with other plug-ins.

Grooves and 51 kits

The groove section has 82 groove palettes collecting the playing of session drummers, plus individual grooves. The core library has 51 kits, and you can start by choosing from 60 ready-mixed preset kits.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: programming the drums for a song. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "Realism and depth" counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information. Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent.
