Soundtoys PrimalTap delay plug-in: features and spec-based rating

Soundtoys PrimalTap delay plug-in: features and spec-based rating

Soundtoys’ PrimalTap is a two-line delay based on the “Prime Time”, a digital delay that appeared in 1978. Multiply doubles the delay length while making the sound rougher, and VCO (wobble) and Freeze let you make lo-fi echoes and loops in which the pitch moves.

A delay delays a sound and repeats it, like an echo. You use it to add width and rhythm to vocals and guitars.

In this article we compare PrimalTap with 10 delay plug-ins and rate how well it serves its purpose on three criteria. The basis is official manufacturer information.

Comparison table of reverb and delay: how each sounds, its effect and where it is used

TOC

Summary

Among the 10 delay plug-ins, PrimalTap is rank B. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and B is third from the top. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5, with the one criterion that matters most for the purpose counted double) gives 3.0.

Who it suits: people who want to try a rough 1980s-style digital delay and effects that change a lot with the knobs.

Main features of PrimalTap

Multiply changes length and sound quality

On the real Prime Time, a trick from the days when memory was expensive meant that doubling the delay length halved the sampling frequency. PrimalTap’s Multiply recreates this, so a longer echo comes at the cost of a rough, lo-fi sound. The manufacturer explains that turning it during playback can make an effect in which the pitch jumps.

Wobble with the VCO

The VCO (an oscillator whose frequency changes with voltage) section adds wobble and movement to the echo. You can make everything from a chorus-like effect to a tape-like flanger and an echo whose pitch slowly drifts. Unlike the real unit, you can raise Rate into the pitch range to make a robot-like effect.

Loop with Freeze

The Freeze button captures part of the incoming sound and loops it. You can match it to the tempo or set any length you like. Moving Time or VCO turns it into a sound effect with warped pitch.

Two delay lines and Little PrimalTap

There are two independent delays, and each can be synced to the tempo. Little PrimalTap, a simple version with only one line, is also included.

Where it is useful

  • Adding a short, rough 1980s-style echo to the end of a vocal phrase
  • Making a loop with Freeze as an effect for an intro or a break
  • Deepening the VCO to add a wobbling echo to a guitar

Rating by criterion

Tone character: 3 / 5

We check whether you can choose the tone of the repeats, such as the warmth of tape and analog gear.

The sound of a vintage digital delay based on the Prime Time. There is no switching to other tones, such as tape style.

Rhythm and width: 3 / 5

We check whether you can make rhythm and width, such as repeats that bounce left and right or repeat several times at different intervals.

There are two independent delay lines, and each can be synced to the tempo by note length or in milliseconds. We could not confirm any listing of ping-pong.

Easy to blend: 3 / 5

We check whether you can adjust the repeats so they do not get in the way of the vocal (for example, making them quieter while singing).

The VCO (wobble) can make everything from a chorus-like effect to unusual effects. We could not confirm any listing of a filter or ducking.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: adding depth and lingering tails to a vocal. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "Tone character" counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information. Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent. The "OBS (streaming)" column in the table shows whether the official page lists the VST2 format that the streaming software OBS Studio can use (○). OBS does not support the VST3 format. It is not part of the score.
