What is SSL 4000 G Bus Compressor?
SSL 4000 G Bus Compressor is Universal Audio’s plug-in version of the bus compressor on SSL mixing consoles. It is a staple for “glue”, bringing a whole mix together (per the manufacturer).
It is a UAD Native plug-in, so it works without dedicated hardware such as an Apollo (per the manufacturer).
Features
A recreation of the circuit of SSL’s classic “G bus compressor”
UA describes it as an end-to-end circuit emulation officially licensed by SSL (Solid State Logic). It is the classic “glue” for making a mix bigger, stronger and more cohesive, and UA says it goes further than UA’s earlier SSL G Bus plug-in.
Simple controls you can use right away
With few knobs it covers everything from gentle, transparent compression to a rough texture with peak limiting. The attack and release are fixed values that SSL tuned for bus use. Release has an “Auto Release” that changes automatically with the sound (per the manufacturer).
A sidechain filter prevents low-frequency pumping
The internal sidechain filter lets you adjust how much it reacts to low sounds, which reduces low-frequency pumping.
Mix makes parallel compression easy
The Mix knob, which sets the ratio to the original sound, makes parallel compression on a drum or vocal bus quick. Headroom adjusts the overall operating level.
Auto Fade
It includes Auto Fade, which recreates the distinctive SSL fade shapes of the console hardware (up to 60 seconds).
Artist presets
Presets made by mix engineers such as Just Blaze and Peter Mokran are included (per the manufacturer).
Specifications and system requirements
- Runs natively on macOS and Windows computers (UAD Native). Processing on Apollo and UAD accelerators is also supported
- For detailed system requirements, see “system requirements” on UA’s official page
