What is Pythor V2?
Pythor V2 is a compressor built on a PWM (pulse width modulation) design. The manufacturer describes it as fast, aggressive and musical, and especially suited to drums (per the manufacturer). It runs on Mac (VST3, AU, AAX) and Windows 10 or later, 64-bit. The manufacturer’s site offers a 15-day trial. The manufacturer’s page is titled “Pythor”; the V2 changes below come from the store’s description.
Features
PWM compression
The manufacturer says the pulse width modulation approach gives a VCA-like “smack” with the steady decay of a FET design (per the manufacturer).
2-band parametric EQ
Low and high bands are built into the compressor. This is an addition to the original hardware design (per the manufacturer).
Mix control and VU meter
A mix control blends the dry and compressed signals for parallel compression, and a VU meter shows the gain reduction (per the manufacturer).
What is new in V2, and Ultra-X mode
V2 has a new interface, a preset browser and lower CPU use, and it replaces V1 when installed (the store’s description). Ultra-X mode runs models of up to 192 kHz built with the manufacturer’s NM2 machine-learning technology to reduce aliasing (per the manufacturer).
Who it suits
- People who want punchy, fast compression on drums or a drum bus
- People who like to add a little EQ inside the same plug-in
- People who own Pythor V1 and want the updated version
