Spectrasonics Omnisphere 3 synthesizer: features and spec-based rating

Spectrasonics Omnisphere 3 synthesizer: features and spec-based rating

Spectrasonics’ Omnisphere 3 is a large synthesizer with thousands of sounds in 18 libraries. It has “Adaptive Global Controls”, which analyze a sound automatically before they act, and “Patch Mutations”, which make a variation of a sound with one button. It also supports wavetable (a method that makes sound by switching between waveforms of different shapes) and granular synthesis, and can import your own audio.

A synthesizer is an instrument that makes sound electronically. You use it for the melodies, accompaniment and sound effects of a song.

In this article we compare Omnisphere 3 with 13 synthesizers and rate how well it serves its purpose on three criteria. The basis is official manufacturer information.

Summary

Among the 13 synthesizers, Omnisphere 3 is rank S. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and S is the top. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5, with the one criterion that matters most for the purpose counted double) gives 5.0.

Strengths

  • Ready-to-use sounds (5 points): it comes with many sounds, so you can use them just by choosing.
  • Range of sound design (5 points): you can make sound in several ways, which covers a wide range of tones.
  • Help with sound design (5 points): you can change a sound with simple controls even without detailed knowledge.

Who it suits: people who want to quickly find a sound that fits their song among a huge number of sounds.

Main features of Omnisphere 3

Thousands of sounds in 18 libraries

Omnisphere 3 has thousands of sounds in 18 libraries made by Spectrasonics’ sound-design team. They are organized by how you use them, so it is easy to find the sound you want. According to the manufacturer, thanks to a new compression technique the storage space needed is the same as for Omnisphere 2, even though there are more sounds.

Adaptive Global Controls that analyze the sound

Big knobs for Tone, Ambience, Filter, Envelope, Vibrato and Unison change things such as the brightness, ambience and attack of a whole sound at once. The manufacturer explains that these knobs analyze the chosen sound automatically before they act, so they change any sound musically. Even if you do not know how a synthesizer works, you can quickly adjust a preset to fit your song.

Patch Mutations make variations with one button

Patch Mutations is a feature that makes variations of the current sound, from subtle to dramatic, with one button. The variations are saved automatically, so you can go back and compare them later. When you want a “slightly different version” of a sound you like, you do not have to start over.

Many ways of making sound in one instrument

There are 638 synth waveforms, and all of them can be played as wavetables. It can also use its own sound sources recorded from instruments and everyday objects, granular synthesis, FM, the new Quadzone, and import of your own audio files. You can layer up to 20 oscillators in one sound.

Where it is useful

  • Searching thousands of sounds for a pad or sound effect that fits the mood of a song
  • Adjusting a favorite preset to the song with the Tone and Ambience knobs
  • Using Patch Mutations to make variations of one sound and use them in different parts, such as the chorus

Rating by criterion

Ready-to-use sounds: 5 / 5

We look at the number of presets (ready-made sounds) included from the start.

It has thousands of sounds in 18 libraries.

Range of sound design: 5 / 5

We look at how many sound-generation methods (ways of making sound) you can use.

Besides synth waveforms, wavetables, sampled sound sources, granular and FM, it can use Quadzone and import of your own audio.

Help with sound design: 5 / 5

We look at whether there are features (big knobs, randomization and so on) that let you change a sound without detailed knowledge.

It has Patch Mutations, which make variations of a sound with one button, and global controls (Tone, Ambience and so on) that analyze the sound before they act.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: quickly preparing sounds that suit your own songs or cover-song backing tracks in a home studio. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "Ready-to-use sounds" counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information, and the number of presets is the number written on the official page (products that do not state it get a lower score). Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent.

Trade-magazine review (for reference, not part of the score)

We summarized the main points from a review in an overseas music-production magazine.

Sound On Sound (March 2026)

  • Praised it as a soft synth that sounds good, is easy to use and is very rich in features
  • Said the 18 themed libraries mean you will not run out of sounds
  • Named as a drawback that trying all 26,000 new sounds would take far too long
