What is iD24?

The iD24 is a USB-C audio interface from Audient in the UK. With 10 inputs and 14 outputs, it is a mid-sized unit aimed at home recording and small studios, able to track two mics and an instrument while leaving room to grow.

It carries two Audient console mic preamps with 68 dB of gain. The maker says true 48V phantom power is available on each channel even when the unit runs on USB bus power.

The rear panel has ADAT in and out, so an outboard preamp can add up to eight extra input channels. Two sets of speakers can be connected, and there are two headphone jacks (a quarter-inch and a mini jack) so two people can monitor at once.

For streaming and podcasting, an audio loopback function captures playback from applications together with the mic inputs. The bundled iD Software Mixer offers low-latency direct monitoring and up to two stereo cue mixes.

Two Audient console mic preamps

Two preamps derived from the company's console design offer 68 dB of gain. That headroom may be useful when recording quiet sources such as vocals or acoustic instruments.

48V phantom power on bus power

The unit runs from USB 3.0 bus power while still supplying 48V phantom power per channel, according to the maker. This helps when building a simple laptop-and-condenser-mic setup without an extra power adapter.

Expandable via ADAT and S/PDIF

Optical ports support ADAT in and out plus S/PDIF, so an ADAT preamp can add up to eight more input channels. It suits people who start with two inputs and want to grow later.

Two speaker sets, two headphone jacks

Four line outputs can feed two speaker pairs or an external headphone amp. The quarter-inch and mini headphone jacks let a singer and an engineer listen at the same time.

Three programmable function buttons

Three front buttons can be assigned to speaker switching, talkback, polarity invert, or mono sum, putting frequently used actions within reach.

Talkback and loopback

Any computer audio source, such as a built-in or USB mic, can serve as the talkback mic. Loopback records application playback alongside mic inputs, which may help with streaming or call recording.

iD Software Mixer

The bundled mixer software handles low-latency direct monitoring, up to two stereo cue mixes, channel naming, layout presets, and button assignment.
