What is RM-ATZ19?

The RM-ATZ19 (model RM-ATZ19R) is an in-ear binaural recording microphone released by Radius in May 2023. Each earpiece houses a small microphone, so recording while wearing it is meant to capture the space roughly as the wearer hears it.

The capsules are small electret condenser microphones made by Primo. Radius describes a flat frequency response and high sensitivity. Besides recording, the earpieces can be used for monitoring while you record.

It supports high-resolution recording and carries the Japan Audio Society High-Res mark. The drivers use an FLW (Floating Lead Wire) structure that Radius says keeps noise low, which suits monitoring during recording.

It connects through two 3.5 mm stereo mini plugs and is used with recorders, video cameras and other devices with a mic jack that supplies plug-in power. Radius lists live streaming, outdoor recording and ASMR video production among the intended uses.

Binaural capture at the ears

Small microphones sit in each earpiece. Recording at the ear position includes the left-right spacing of the head, which may help when you want to keep a sense of space in ASMR or ambient recordings.

Primo electret condenser capsules

The capsules are omnidirectional, with a stated recording range of 30 Hz to 40,000 Hz, sensitivity of -43 dB and maximum input of 127 dB SPL. The wide stated range may suit capturing fine ambient detail.

Monitoring while recording

The earphone section is a 12.5 mm dynamic driver with a 10 Hz to 20,000 Hz playback range. Because you hear the sound through the same earpieces, it may be handy for checking levels and how the surroundings are coming in.

High-res recording and FLW driver

It carries the Japan Audio Society High-Res mark. The FLW driver structure is intended to reduce noise, which may matter in quiet recording environments.

Deep-mount tips and adjustable port

The deep-mount eartips aim for stable fit and bass playback. A two-step adjustable port is also included, which may help you find a comfortable setup for recording on the move.

Detachable windscreen

A detachable windscreen is included that Radius says reduces wind noise by about 20 dB (manufacturer testing). It may help for outdoor recording where wind is a concern.

45-degree plugs

The plugs are angled at 45 degrees, which Radius says reduces strain on the cable. This may be convenient when carrying a recorder with the plugs inserted.

  • Monitoring eartips (XS/S/M/L)
  • Windscreen
  • Storage pouch
  • Instruction manual (warranty card)
  • Works with: recorders, video cameras and similar devices with a stereo mic jack and plug-in power

How to use it

  1. Prepare a recorder or camera with a mic input that supplies plug-in power.
  2. Insert the two 3.5 mm plugs into the device's mic input and headphone (monitor) jack. Check the manual for which plug goes where.
  3. Choose eartips that fit from the included sizes and wear the left and right earpieces correctly.
  4. In windy places, attach the windscreen.
  5. Start with a low recording level and adjust using the actual sound you will record.
  6. When monitoring while recording, adjust device sensitivity and settings to avoid feedback.
  7. Play back the recording on headphones or earphones to check the sense of space.

ASMR and ambient recording

Recording at the ear position may preserve the left-right spread of whispers and ambient sound, which could suit works meant for headphone listening.

Live streaming and video production

Radius lists live streaming and outdoor video production as uses. It may be a candidate when you want immersive sound to go with footage.

Outdoor field recording

With the windscreen included and a weight of about 19 g, it may be easy to take along for walks or travel recordings.

Capturing how an instrument sounds

Radius mentions reproducing how the player or a listener hears an instrument. It may be useful for practice or checking your own playing.

Who it may suit

  • People who want to record ASMR or ambient sound in binaural
  • People who want easy spatial recordings with a recorder or camera
  • People who want to monitor on the same earpieces while recording
  • People collecting sound for outdoor video or streaming content

Good to know before you buy

  • Power comes from the connected device's plug-in power (2.0 V to 5.5 V). Check that the device supports it.
  • It will not necessarily work when plugged straight into a phone or USB interface. Check the mic input specification.
  • Monitoring may cause feedback depending on the device's sensitivity and settings.
  • The windscreen (BK-WS00K) and deep-mount eartips (HP-DME00) are also sold separately.

How it differs from similar products

We do not pick a winner; the official figures are placed side by side.

Roland CS-10EM

The RM-ATZ19 lists a 30 Hz to 40,000 Hz recording range, -43 dB sensitivity and an about 110 cm cable. The CS-10EM lists a 20 to 20,000 Hz mic response, -40 dB sensitivity and a 1.5 m Y-type cable.
