Plugin Alliance SPL De-Esser Collection plug-in: features and spec-based rating

The SPL De-Esser Collection from Plugin Alliance is a collection that recreates two of SPL’s analog hardware de-essers (a single-band and a dual-band). It has the Auto Dynamic De-Esser method, which automatically finds the sibilance frequency, Auto-Threshold, which adjusts automatically, algorithms for male and female voices, and an M/S mode.

A de-esser reduces only the harsh sounds that stand out on “S” and similar sounds in singing (sibilance).

In this article we compare SPL De-Esser Collection with 12 de-esser plug-ins and rate how well it serves its purpose on three criteria. The basis is official manufacturer information.

Before and after de-essing: the loud S sounds are held down only at the moment they occur

Summary

Among the 12 de-esser plug-ins, SPL De-Esser Collection is rank A. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and A is second from the top. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5, with the one criterion that matters most for the purpose counted double) gives 3.8.

Strengths

  • Natural reduction (4 points): it reduces only the harsh sounds naturally, without changing the voice quality.
  • Speed (4 points): automatic settings or few knobs let you start right away.

Who it suits: people who want to reduce sibilance without agonizing over settings and while keeping the voice quality.

Main features of SPL De-Esser Collection

Auto Dynamic De-Esser finds the sibilance frequency automatically

A common de-esser compresses the whole band where the sibilance lies, so a wrong setting tends to make the voice sound lispy or nasal. The manufacturer explains that SPL’s method looks at the whole frequency range, automatically finds the sibilance frequency, and cancels only that narrow band.

Auto-Threshold and male and female algorithms

Auto-Threshold corrects the threshold automatically even when the singer moves closer to or farther from the microphone. You can choose an algorithm for male voices or for female voices, and an A/B switch lets you compare settings.

M/S mode

It has an M/S stereo mode that the real units do not have. The manufacturer explains that in de-essing a whole mix, it makes it harder to lose the highs of cymbals, guitars and keyboards. Two plug-ins, single-band and dual-band, are included.

Where it is useful

  • Automatically reducing the “S” sounds of a vocal without agonizing over settings
  • Switching the algorithm to match male and female voices
  • Using the M/S mode to reduce harshness across a whole mix

Rating by criterion

Natural reduction: 4 / 5

We check whether it has a mechanism that reduces only the harsh “S” sounds that hurt the ears, without changing the voice quality.

It watches the whole frequency range, automatically finds the sibilance band, and mixes in only that narrow band in opposite phase to cancel it. The manufacturer explains that it is less likely to affect other bands.

Speed: 4 / 5

We check whether it has features that get you to a good setting quickly (automatic settings, a single knob and so on).

It has Auto-Threshold, which corrects the threshold automatically even when the singer moves away from or toward the microphone, and automatic detection of the sibilance frequency. You can also choose algorithms for male and female voices.

Breadth of uses: 3 / 5

We check whether it also handles problems other than sibilance (plosives, harsh ringing) and can be used while recording.

It has an M/S mode, and the manufacturer explains it can also be used for de-essing a whole mix. We could not confirm other descriptions such as low latency.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: naturally reducing the sibilance of a vocal. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "Natural reduction" counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information. Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent. The "OBS (streaming)" column in the table shows whether the official page lists the VST2 format that the streaming software OBS Studio can use (○). OBS does not support the VST3 format. It is not part of the score.
