Antares Vocal De-Esser plug-in: features and spec-based rating

Antares Vocal De-Esser plug-in: features and spec-based rating

Antares’ Vocal De-Esser is a de-esser for vocals that uses AI to identify sibilance. You can adjust soft sibilants (S, Sh, Z) and hard sibilants (T, Ch, K) separately.

A de-esser reduces only the harsh sounds that stand out on “S” and similar sounds in singing (sibilance).

In this article we compare Vocal De-Esser with 12 de-esser plug-ins and rate how well it serves its purpose on three criteria. The basis is official manufacturer information.

Summary

Among the 12 de-esser plug-ins, Vocal De-Esser is rank A. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and A is second from the top. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5, with the one criterion that matters most for the purpose counted double) gives 4.0.

Strengths

  • Natural reduction (4 points): it reduces only the harsh sounds naturally, without changing the voice quality.
  • Speed (5 points): automatic settings or few knobs let you start right away.

Who it suits: people who want to use the same maker as Auto-Tune, and people who want to reduce soft and hard consonants separately.

Main features of Vocal De-Esser

AI trained on human voices

Vocal De-Esser uses AI trained on singing voices, developed in cooperation with professional vocalists, to identify sibilance. On the waveform display, soft sibilants such as S and Sh are shown in blue and hard sibilants such as T and K in orange. You can see by eye what is being processed.

Soft and hard consonants, separately

Soft sibilants and hard sibilants each have their own knob, so you can reduce them by different amounts. With the Audition function you can listen to just the sibilance and adjust while checking the effect. The manufacturer says Intelligent Assist can build a starting point for the settings in three clicks.

Runs in real time, so it also suits live use and speech

The AI detection runs in real time, so it is said to work in live environments. The manufacturer also introduces it for tidying speech in films, podcasts and interviews as well as singing. As part of the Auto-Tune series, it shares the interface design of products such as Vocal EQ and Vocal Compressor.

Where it is useful

  • Reducing the harshness of “S” sounds and “T” and “K” sounds separately in a vocal
  • Tidying the consonants of podcast or video narration
  • Using Intelligent Assist to build a starting point for the settings quickly

Rating by criterion

Natural reduction: 4 / 5

We check whether it has a mechanism that reduces only the harsh “S” sounds that hurt the ears, without changing the voice quality.

AI identifies sibilance and reduces it.

Speed: 5 / 5

We check whether it has features that get you to a good setting quickly (automatic settings, a single knob and so on).

AI identifies sibilance, and the manufacturer says Intelligent Assist sets it up in three clicks.

Breadth of uses: 3 / 5

We check whether it also handles problems other than sibilance (plosives, harsh ringing) and can be used while recording.

You can adjust soft and hard consonants separately. The AI detection runs in real time so it can be used live, and the manufacturer says it can also be used on speech in films and podcasts.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: naturally reducing the sibilance of a vocal. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "Natural reduction" counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information. Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent. The "OBS (streaming)" column in the table shows whether the official page lists the VST2 format that the streaming software OBS Studio can use (○). OBS does not support the VST3 format. It is not part of the score.
