What is JUPITER-8?

JUPITER-8 is a software synth that recreates the polysynth (a synthesizer that can play chords) Roland released in 1981. Roland says it suits warm pads (sustained, spreading sounds), strings and leads (per the manufacturer).

The original has two oscillators in each of its eight voices (four waveforms), cross-modulation and sync, and a low-pass filter that switches between 2-pole and 4-pole. The software version lets you choose between 2 and 8 voices, responds to velocity, and adds effects (chorus, reverb, flanger, delay, overdrive and more) and an enhanced arpeggiator (per the manufacturer).

It supports VST3, AU and AAX, with native Apple Silicon support. It is included in Roland Cloud Pro and Ultimate memberships, and you can also buy it with a Lifetime Key (a one-time purchase) (per the manufacturer).

Features

A classic polysynth from 1981

The JUPITER-8, released in 1981, is a classic polyphonic synthesizer used on many hit records. Roland says its rich analog sound suits warm pads, soaring strings and memorable leads. This software synthesizer is recreated from the circuit level, and it can be used both in your DAW and with Roland’s SYSTEM-8.

The original’s design: 8 voices, two stable VCOs, four waveforms

The original had eight voices, each with two stable VCOs and four waveforms. You can also make cross-modulation and sync sounds. The filters are a low-pass VCF that can be set to 2-pole or 4-pole, and a high-pass without resonance (per the manufacturer).

ACB recreates the circuit behavior

Using Roland’s own ACB technology, the circuit behavior is recreated by analyzing the original’s schematics and historical material. Roland says this includes the original’s quirks and instability.

Modern additions

Additions include velocity response, a wider oscillator range, an effects section and an enhanced arpeggiator. The LFO, arpeggiator and effects sync to tempo (per the manufacturer).

Circuit Mod: the charm of hardware “drift” on one knob

Borrowing the idea of the trimmers that adjusted component drift in old synths, it offers “Circuit Mod”, which moves several trimmers at once with a single macro knob (per the manufacturer).
