What is EL8 Distressor?

This is Universal Audio’s plug-in version of the Empirical Labs Distressor (EL8) compressor. The original is a studio staple, and UA describes the plug-in as “a true emulation of the Distressor with all of its features and sound” (per the manufacturer).

It is a UAD plug-in, but it runs natively on a macOS or Windows computer without any dedicated hardware (you can also process it on Apollo and similar devices). Plug-in-only features include Dry/Wet, which mixes in the original sound, and Headroom, which adjusts the operating level (per the manufacturer).

UA describes the plug-in as an emulation, with the features and sound of the Empirical Labs Distressor, one of the modern compressors used in studios around the world (per the manufacturer). As a benchmark when comparing it with other recreations, it points to the original’s very fast attack time.

Many compression ratios to choose from

At a 1:1 ratio it does not compress and only adds harmonics, which can warm synths and strings slightly. The strongest setting, “Nuke”, can add explosive energy to room microphones or a whole mix (per the manufacturer).

Dist 2 and Dist 3 distortion modes

The well-known “Dist 2” and “Dist 3” modes add distortion made of only even-order harmonics, or of a mix of even and odd harmonics. They are a way to add color to the compression.

Sidechain adjustment

The sidechain settings can reduce pumping caused by low-frequency sounds. UA says this suits drum buses. “Band Emphasis” softens vocals or instrument peaks that tend to sound harsh.

Dry/Wet, which mixes in the original sound, makes parallel compression easy. Headroom lets you set the operating level yourself.

From “Download” in your Plugin Boutique account, or at uaudio.com/my/account/redeem/, enter your email address and serial code and press “Get my Plug-in”.
Create a Universal Audio account.
Download and install “UA Connect” for your operating system, then sign in with your UA account.
Choose whether you already have an iLok account or want to create a new one, link it with your iLok user ID and password, and press “Authorize”.
