What is ShapeShape 50 / 65 / Twin?
Shape is a series of nearfield active studio monitors that Focal makes in its French workshops. The current models are the 5-inch Shape 50, the 6.5-inch Shape 65 and the 2.5-way Shape Twin; Focal's site marks Shape 40 as discontinued.
The main feature is the woofer with a Flax cone made from flax fibers. Combined with a 1-inch aluminum-magnesium M-shaped dome tweeter, Focal says it aims for a stereo image that is both wide and precise.
The cabinet is MDF with real walnut veneer on the top and front. Because it has no port, it is described as easy to position near a wall. Mounting inserts on the back and underside allow installation on stands, walls or ceilings.
Inputs are XLR and RCA, with bass and treble level controls, a disengageable high-pass filter and a 160 Hz control. Class AB amplifiers are used, and the design assumes nearfield use in small rooms.
Flax-cone woofers
Shape 50 has a 5-inch, 65 a 6.5-inch and Twin two 5-inch Flax cones. Focal says the material helps a transparent low-mid and midrange.
M-shaped dome tweeter
A 1-inch aluminum-magnesium tweeter that Focal says aims for high definition and precision at very high frequencies.
Ventless design
The 50 uses two passive radiators and the Twin uses two 21 cm passive radiators. With no port, it is easier to place near a wall, and Focal says Shape 50 fits rooms under 12 square meters.
Room controls
A high-pass filter (full range, 45, 60, 90 Hz), a 160 Hz bass/mid control (±3 dB), and bass (±6 dB) and treble (±3 dB) levels are provided.
Mounting inserts
Inserts on the back and underside allow table stands, microphone stands, ceilings or walls. Mounting accessories are not supplied.
Walnut veneer
The MDF cabinet is covered on top and front with through-dyed walnut veneer, in a compact and discreet look.
