Free DAWs You Can Use (2026 Edition): Completely Free vs Bundled-Only, Sorted Out

You do not always need to pay for the DAW itself to start DTM. But “free” comes in many kinds, from completely free ones, to bundled-only versions that only buyers of hardware can use, to trial versions with no time limit but with limits on saving. In this article we checked the current state of the free versions of the main DAWs on each official page (checked on September 24, and rechecked on September 28, 2026) and sorted out the differences.

There are three types of “free DAW”

Three types of
Figure: SoundBounty

DAWs that advertise being free fall broadly into these three types.

  • Completely free: even if features are limited, you can keep using them with no time or machine limits (GarageBand, Reason Free, Waveform Free, LMMS, BandLab’s browser version and others)
  • Bundled-only: not sold on their own, and available only to people who bought or use compatible hardware or services (Cubase LE / AI, Ableton Live Lite and others)
  • Trial: you can try it free, but you cannot keep using it unless you buy, or some features are limited (FL Studio’s unlimited trial and others)

Below, based on this classification, we introduce the current state of representative DAWs.

DAWs you can use completely free

GarageBand (Apple)

According to Apple’s official page, GarageBand can be downloaded free from the App Store. The Mac version supports macOS Monterey or later, and there is also GarageBand for iOS for iPhone and iPad. You need an Apple Account to download it, but there is no limit on time or number of machines. But it is for Apple’s operating systems only, so it cannot be used on Windows or Android.

Reason Free (Reason Studios)

This is a new product Reason Studios announced in August 2026. According to the official announcement, Reason Free is a free version of the “Reason rack” with a total of 15 devices, including the synth “Europa”, the drum machine “Kong” and the reverb “RV7000 MkII”, and can be used with no trial period, expiry or watermark. It can be used as a VST3 / AU / AAX plug-in inside other DAWs (Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Pro Tools and others), and also runs standalone as a DAW with up to 16 tracks. Additional instruments and effects are bought separately in the Rack Extension store.

Tracktion Waveform Free

On Tracktion’s official page, Waveform Free is introduced as “a fully functional, unlimited free DAW”. It includes 14 effects, 8 MIDI effects, 11 utilities and 4 built-in instruments, and gives you the basics of recording, MIDI sequencing and mixing for free. The difference from the higher-end Pro is the presence of additional features, and you add features by buying expansion packs (paid) individually. It is also explained that on the Linux version, Pro-equivalent features are unlocked automatically even in Waveform Free.

LMMS

LMMS is a free, open-source, multi-platform DAW. According to the official site it supports Windows, macOS and Linux, and can be used with no cost or feature limits. There are no license fees, including for commercial use.

BandLab (browser version)

BandLab is an online DAW that runs in the browser, introduced on the official site as a “FREE Online DAW”. You can use the basic features such as recording, MIDI editing and mixing free with just account registration, and there is also a mobile app. Advanced features are added with BandLab Membership (paid), but even the free range lets you do everything from production to export.

A “free DAW” whose situation changed: where Cakewalk stands now

“Cakewalk by BandLab”, once the leading completely free DAW, ended on August 1, 2025, according to the official FAQ. The successor “Cakewalk Sonar” is described on its official product page as “free and fully functional as an evaluation mode”, and in practice you can use it free under conditions such as only one arranger track, no use of the premium plug-ins (Core Plugin Suite) and limits on integrations such as BandLab Sounds. To use all features you need to join the “BandLab Membership” subscription. Sonar runs only on Windows 11 or later and does not support Mac.

If you need Mac support, there is “Cakewalk Next”, also from BandLab. According to the official page it supports both Windows and macOS, and like Sonar it is built from a free tier and feature expansion with Membership. If you are looking for a “free Cakewalk”, check Sonar or Next, not the old Cakewalk by BandLab.

Bundled-only DAWs (you cannot buy them on their own)

Cubase LE / AI (Steinberg / Yamaha)

Cubase AI and Cubase LE are lite versions of Cubase bundled with compatible hardware such as Steinberg (Yamaha) audio interfaces. They are not sold as a standalone download, and are offered to users who bought a compatible product. Upgrade paths to the higher-end Cubase Pro and Artist are also provided.

Ableton Live Lite

On Ableton’s official Live Lite page, you are told to have a “Live Lite serial number” ready before you download. Live Lite is the version that comes when you buy compatible hardware and so on, and you cannot use it without a serial number. People who have a previous Live Lite can update to the new version for free (per the official page).

Looks “free” but has conditions: trial and semi-free DAWs

FL Studio (Image-Line)

According to the FL Studio official support page, the normal trial (demo) version can be used with no time limit, but the main limit is that “you cannot reopen a saved project before you buy the product”. Exporting (exporting audio) itself is possible, so you can use it in a way that finishes within one session, but you need to buy to continue working. A time-limited trial (such as 21 days) in which saving and reloading are possible may also be offered.

Fender Studio Pro (formerly Studio One)

PreSonus’ Studio One Pro is now named “Fender Studio Pro”, according to Fender’s official FAQ. The former free version “Studio One Prime” (formerly Studio One Free) is, together with Artist, treated as a “former edition”. Fender’s official FAQ explains that the one-time license for sale is the one kind, Fender Studio Pro. To try it for free, there is a 30-day trial of Fender Studio Pro. Fender’s recording app “Fender Studio” can be used free.

Ardour

Ardour is an open-source DAW, and its official FAQ explains that it is “free as in free speech, not free as in free beer”. The source code is published for free, and if you build it yourself, it costs nothing. On the other hand, to get the prebuilt executable, the latest nightly builds and developer support, a payment of at least $1 is needed (a subscription of about $45 a month is recommended for continued use). There is also a free demo version that you can use for only 10 minutes. The big difference from other DAWs is that “free” and “prebuilt and ready to use” do not go together.

Free DAWs no longer in use or discontinued

“Cakewalk by BandLab” ended on August 1, 2025, according to the official FAQ. It may still be introduced in past articles and roundup sites, but as of September 24, 2026, where to get it is its successor “Cakewalk Sonar” (Windows only) or “Cakewalk Next” (Windows and Mac). Project files are said to open in each other, but features exclusive to Sonar cannot be used in older versions.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Can I finish a song with only a free DAW?

Yes. Reason Free, Waveform Free, LMMS and BandLab in particular are free versions you can use with no limit on time or number of machines. But the number and kinds of instruments and effects included are smaller than in paid versions, so depending on your genre it can feel lacking.

Q. Is there a way to get just Cubase AI or Ableton Live Lite for free?

They are not officially distributed on their own, so the proper way to get them is to buy or use compatible hardware (such as an audio interface) or a bundled product.

Q. Can I use FL Studio’s unlimited trial with practically full features?

Making sound and exporting is possible even in the free version, but according to official support, you cannot reopen a saved project file before you buy the product. If you want to split your work into stages, you need to buy.

Q. Is Ardour free, or paid, in the end?

Building it yourself is free, but the official explanation is that getting the official prebuilt app requires payment. On Windows and macOS, building it yourself is difficult, so it is closer to the reality to see it as “a DAW for which payment is recommended if you use it”.

Summary

As of September 24, 2026, GarageBand, Reason Free, Waveform Free, LMMS and BandLab (browser version) can be used as completely free DAWs with no limits. Even with the same “free”, conditions differ greatly: Cubase AI / LE and Ableton Live Lite are bundled-only and cannot be bought on their own, FL Studio is an unlimited trial with a limit on saving, and Ardour is free only if you build it from source. Cakewalk by BandLab, once a standard, ended in August 2025, and Sonar or Next is its successor now. Check the supported OS and the free range on the official page before you choose.

Free plug-ins you can use for mixing are summarized in Free plug-ins for a cover-song mix.
