Auburn Sounds Graillon 3 (free) pitch-correction plug-in: features and spec-based rating

The Auburn Sounds pitch-correction plug-in Graillon 3 is a live voice changer that can correct pitch while you sing and change the pitch and formants (the character of the voice). Pitch correction and pitch shifting are available even in the free version.

A pitch-correction plug-in is a tool that fixes pitch that has gone out of tune in a vocal. You can fix it naturally, or use it as a robotic effect.

In this article we compare Graillon 3 with 15 pitch-correction plug-ins and rate how well it serves its purpose on three criteria. The basis is official manufacturer information.

Two types of pitch correction

TOC

Summary

Among the 15 pitch-correction plug-ins, Graillon 3 is rank C. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and C is the lowest. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5, with the one criterion that matters most for the purpose counted double) gives 2.0.

Things to keep in mind

  • Natural result (2 points): there is little fine adjustment, which limits how natural the correction can be.
  • Real-time correction (2 points): it is not suited to real-time use.
  • Harmony and multiple tracks (1 points): it has few features for handling harmonies together.

Who it suits: people who want to try real-time correction, from hard-tune style to natural, for free.

Main features of Graillon 3

Real-time pitch correction, even in the free version

Graillon 3 is an Auburn Sounds voice changer that can correct pitch while you sing. You can set anything from hard-tune style to natural correction, and pitch shifting and formant changes are also available. There are a free version (Free Edition) and a paid full version, and here we rate it on the content of the free version.

Three pitch engines

You can choose from three: G2, which keeps the sound of GRAILLON 2, G3, a newly made sound, and I1, the engine of INNER PITCH. The manufacturer says that with I1 and settings such as Smooth, unobtrusive natural correction is also possible.

Built-in effects for vocals

A compressor, gate, chorus, preamp and bitcrusher are included. The manufacturer explains that these add no latency. The full version adds PTM, which changes the sound to follow the pitch, tuning from a keyboard, and a vocal doubler.

Where it is useful

  • Trying real-time pitch correction for free
  • Changing the pitch and formants of a voice to make a voice quality
  • Applying a hard-tune style effect when streaming or recording

Rating by criterion

Natural result: 2 / 5

We look at how finely you can adjust to correct a vocal naturally.

It has three pitch engines and settings from natural correction to hard-tune style. There is no screen for correcting note by note.

If “natural result” matters most to you, Melodyne 5 studio and Melodyne 5 editor (5 points) are a better fit.

Speed: 3 / 5

We look at the features that make the correction work faster.

Automatic correction fixes things quickly. It does not support ARA (a mechanism that connects to the DAW so you can edit directly without loading the track).

Real-time correction: 2 / 5

We look at how easy it is to use for streaming and for recording through the plug-in.

It is a real-time voice changer.

If “real-time correction” matters most to you, AutoTune Advanced (5 points) is a better fit.

Harmony and multiple tracks: 1 / 5

We look at how easy it is to handle harmonies and backing vocals.

There is no harmony generation or multi-track editing (the vocal doubler is in the paid full version only).

If “harmony and multiple tracks” matters most to you, Melodyne 5 studio (5 points) is a better fit.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: correcting a cover-song vocal. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "Natural result", the most important criterion for cover songs, counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information. Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent.
