Minimal Audio Evoke vocal processing plug-in: features and spec-based rating

Minimal Audio Evoke vocal processing plug-in: features and spec-based rating

Minimal Audio’s vocal effect Evoke uses “resynthesis”, which takes a vocal apart and rebuilds it, to make leads, harmonies and processed voices. It includes pitch correction (including a hard-tune style), harmonies of up to four voices and 15 character modes.

A vocal processing plug-in puts the processing a vocal mix needs (EQ, compression, reverb and so on) into one plug-in. Some products also have an AI build the groundwork for you.

In this article we compare Evoke with 10 vocal processing plug-ins and rate how well it serves its purpose on three criteria. The basis is official manufacturer information.

Summary

Among the 10 vocal processing plug-ins, Evoke is rank C. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and C is the lowest. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5, with the one criterion that matters most for the purpose counted double) gives 2.0.

Strengths

  • Pitch correction and harmony (4 points): it has features for correcting pitch and making harmonies.

Things to keep in mind

  • AI groundwork (1 points): its AI groundwork is limited.
  • Cleaning up the recording (1 points): there is little for dealing with noise and room sound.

Who it suits: people who want to build harmonies and modern processed voices from a vocal quickly.

Main features of Evoke

Resynthesis, which rebuilds a vocal

Evoke is a vocal effect that works by “resynthesis”: it breaks a vocal down into pitch, tone and so on, processes each part separately, and rebuilds it as a new voice. The manufacturer explains that, unlike conventional pitch correction or a vocoder, it does not process the input but creates a new signal.

Pitch correction and harmonies of up to four voices

You can set anything from natural pitch tracking to strong hard-tune. It can also make harmonies of up to four voices that fit a scale, with the level and pan set for each voice. 15 character modes switch the sound from a natural chorus to a futuristic voice.

Effects and modulation

There is a rack that holds eight kinds of effects in 12 slots, and modulation that moves parameters with macros, LFOs, envelope followers and more. More than 350 presets are included.

Where it is useful

  • Making a harmony chorus from a single vocal
  • Making a modern, processed lead voice
  • Setting pitches by MIDI to play the voice like an instrument

Rating by criterion

AI groundwork: 1 / 5

We look at whether the AI builds the vocal processing for you.

A feature in which AI proposes the processing is not described. You can start from more than 350 presets.

Cleaning up the recording: 1 / 5

We look at how it deals with home-recording noise and the room’s ring.

Dealing with noise and room ring is not described.

If “cleaning up the recording” matters most to you, prime:vocal (5 points) is a better fit.

Fine adjustment: 3 / 5

We look at whether you can work on the AI’s result yourself.

You can work with a rack of eight kinds of effects in 12 slots, modulation and a spectral filter.

Pitch correction and harmony: 4 / 5

We look at features for correcting pitch and making harmonies.

It offers pitch correction, from natural pitch tracking to hard-tune, and harmonies of up to four voices that fit a scale.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: quickly getting a cover-song vocal into a state ready to mix. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "AI groundwork" counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information. Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent. The "OBS (streaming)" column in the table shows whether the official page lists the VST2 format that the streaming software OBS Studio can use (○). OBS does not support the VST3 format. It is not part of the score.
