FabFilter’s Pro-C 3 is a compressor with 14 compression styles and analog-style coloration (character). It offers up to a six-band sidechain EQ, up to 20 ms of look-ahead and up to 32x oversampling (processing finely inside to reduce distortion noise).
A compressor holds down sounds that are too loud and evens out differences in volume. For vocals it keeps the level stable and easy to hear, and it can also add punch to a sound.
In this article we compare Pro-C 3 with 16 compressor plug-ins and rate how well it serves its purpose on three criteria. The basis is official manufacturer information.

Summary
Among the 16 compressor plug-ins, Pro-C 3 is rank S. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and S is the top. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5, with the one criterion that matters most for the purpose counted double) gives 4.8.
Strengths
- Compression character (5 points): you can choose among several characters of compression to suit the material and your taste.
- Speed (4 points): automatic aids make it easy to set even if you are not used to compressors.
- Mix applications (5 points): it has wide mix uses, such as reacting to other sounds and mixing with the original sound.
Who it suits: people who want to shape the compression in detail with one compressor, from vocals and drums to the master.
Main features of Pro-C 3
14 compression styles
Pro-C 3 has 14 “styles” with different characters, six of which (Versatile, Smooth, Vari-Mu, El-Op, Upward and TTM) were added in version 3. You can choose among transparent, unobtrusive compression, tube-compressor-style compression, a type that lifts quiet sounds (Upward) and a type that squashes hard, all in one plug-in. You do not need a separate compressor for each source, such as vocals, drums or a whole song.
Analog-style coloration (Character)
Character mode adds analog-style saturation (a faint distortion) and slight variation in the sound. You can also set the amount of Drive and whether the coloration is applied before or after the compression. You can switch between clean compression and warm compression inside the same plug-in.
A sidechain EQ with up to six bands, and an external sidechain
The sidechain, which decides which sounds the compressor reacts to, can have an EQ of up to six bands. For example, if the compressor reacts too much to low frequencies and pumps (the volume rises and falls unnaturally), you can stop the low end from triggering it. It also supports an external sidechain triggered by another track, and triggering by MIDI.
A clear screen and automatic aids that suit beginners
The compression is animated on a large display, so you can see how much the level is being reduced. Auto Gain evens out the level, Auto Release decides the recovery speed automatically, and Auto Threshold keeps the effect consistent even when the voice gets louder or quieter. Mix (0 to 200%) blends in the original sound, which makes parallel compression easy.

Where it is useful
- Evening out the volume of a vocal so that it is easy to hear
- Adding punch to drums and bass with strong compression
- Lowering the bass in time with the kick to reduce low-frequency clashes (external sidechain)
Rating by criterion
Compression character: 5 / 5
We check whether you can choose the character of the compression, from transparent and natural to colored and vintage-style.
It has 14 compression styles, analog-style coloration, up to 20 ms of look-ahead and 32x oversampling.
Speed: 4 / 5
We check whether it has features that get you to a good setting quickly, such as automatic settings and easy presets.
It has auto gain and auto release. It has no AI suggestion feature.
Mix applications: 5 / 5
We check whether it supports mix applications such as reacting to another sound (sidechain) and mixing with the original sound (parallel).
It supports an external sidechain, a sidechain EQ of up to six bands and M/S (a method that separates the center and the sides) channel linking.
How we score (Compressor plug-ins)
| Criterion | Basis | 5 pt | 4 pt | 3 pt | 2 pt | 1 pt |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compression character | Whether you can choose the character of the compression to suit the material and your taste | Many compression styles and coloration to choose from, plus fine controls such as look-ahead | Several styles plus either coloration or spectral processing | Either several styles or a recreation of vintage hardware | One type, but with coloration or compression-curve adjustment | One type |
| Speed | How quickly you can reach a good setting | AI analyzes the sound and suggests settings | Several automatic aids, such as auto gain and auto release | Few knobs; almost everything is set with one | Standard controls | — |
| Mix applications | Uses such as sidechain, parallel and M/S | External sidechain, sidechain EQ, and M/S or parallel are all included | External sidechain plus either parallel or M/S | One of external sidechain, M/S or parallel | — | Not mentioned on the official page |
Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: evening out the volume of a vocal and blending it into the backing track. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "Compression character" counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information. Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent. The "OBS (streaming)" column in the table shows whether the official page lists the VST2 format that the streaming software OBS Studio can use (○). OBS does not support the VST3 format. It is not part of the score.
Trade-magazine review (for reference, not part of the score)
We summarized the main points from a review in an overseas music-production magazine.
Sound On Sound (April 2026)
- Praised the new algorithms and coloration for making vintage-style compression convincing
- Praised the presets as easy to use and helpful for understanding what the knobs mean
- Pointed out that the relationship between what you hear and the display can be hard to grasp for new features such as the automatic threshold
