Klanghelm DC8C compressor plug-in: features and spec-based rating

Klanghelm DC8C compressor plug-in: features and spec-based rating

Klanghelm’s DC8C is a multi-featured compressor from Klanghelm in Germany. One plug-in can produce everything from clean compression with little coloration to opto-style, peak and RMS behavior and hard, squashing compression. It also includes two kinds of saturation (a faint distortion, as if passed through analog gear) for coloration.

A compressor holds down sounds that are too loud and evens out differences in volume. For vocals it keeps the level stable and easy to hear, and it can also add punch to a sound.

In this article we compare DC8C with 16 compressor plug-ins and rate how well it serves its purpose on three criteria. The basis is official manufacturer information.

Summary

Among the 16 compressor plug-ins, DC8C is rank S. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and S is the top. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5, with the one criterion that matters most for the purpose counted double) gives 4.8.

Strengths

  • Compression character (5 points): you can choose among several characters of compression to suit the material and your taste.
  • Speed (4 points): automatic aids make it easy to set even if you are not used to compressors.
  • Mix applications (5 points): it has wide mix uses, such as reacting to other sounds and mixing with the original sound.

Who it suits: people who want to try a wide range, from transparent to characterful compression, in one compressor.

Main features of DC8C

From transparent compression to squashing, in one plug-in

DC8C is Klanghelm’s compressor, and the official page describes its basic character as “clear, smooth and defined”. You can combine four operating modes, NORMAL, CLEAN (a mode that adds no distortion at all), SMASH (very fast, strong compression) and LIMIT (a limiter with no delay), with three compression curves and behaviors such as opto-style, peak and RMS.

Knobs for detailed shaping

It offers fine adjustments that few other compressors have, such as Pre-Attack, which delays the start of the effect to keep the start of the sound, Hold for strong pumping, GR-smoothing, which smooths how the compression reacts, and a knob that moves between feedback and feedforward types.

Sidechain and coloration

Besides an external sidechain, it has high-pass, low-pass and tilt filters that decide which sounds it reacts to. The two saturations (coloration) can be placed before the compression, after it or only in the sidechain. Parallel compression, mixing in the original sound, is also possible.

An Easy mode for beginners

If the detailed knobs confuse you, you can use the Easy mode, where you simply choose from four styles. It also has AGC, which evens out the level automatically, and many presets. As you get used to it, you can move on to detailed adjustment in the same plug-in.

Where it is useful

  • Gently evening out the volume in mastering without changing the sound (CLEAN mode)
  • Squashing drums hard to add power (SMASH mode)
  • Deciding the compression of a vocal first in Easy mode, then shaping it in detail as you get used to it

Rating by criterion

Compression character: 5 / 5

We check whether you can choose the character of the compression, from transparent and natural to colored and vintage-style.

It has four modes (Normal, Clean, Smash and Limit), three compression curves, behaviors such as opto-style, peak and RMS, and two kinds of saturation. Detailed controls such as Pre-Attack and Hold are also available.

Speed: 4 / 5

We check whether it has features that get you to a good setting quickly, such as automatic settings and easy presets.

It has auto gain (AGC), and you can adjust automatic attack and release changes (program dependent). There is also a simple mode where you choose from four styles.

Mix applications: 5 / 5

We check whether it supports mix applications such as reacting to another sound (sidechain) and mixing with the original sound (parallel).

It has an external sidechain, sidechain filters (high-pass, low-pass and tilt) and parallel compression.

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: evening out the volume of a vocal and blending it into the backing track. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "Compression character" counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information. Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent. The "OBS (streaming)" column in the table shows whether the official page lists the VST2 format that the streaming software OBS Studio can use (○). OBS does not support the VST3 format. It is not part of the score.
