sonible smart:comp 3 compressor plug-in: features and spec-based rating

sonible’s smart:comp 3 is a compressor in which AI analyzes the sound and shows usable compression settings as a “map”. It also has a Group mode that adjusts several tracks together, a zero-latency mode and spectral processing.

A compressor holds down sounds that are too loud and evens out differences in volume. For vocals it keeps the level stable and easy to hear, and it can also add punch to a sound.

In this article we compare smart:comp 3 with 16 compressor plug-ins and rate how well it serves its purpose on three criteria. The basis is official manufacturer information.

Summary

Among the 16 compressor plug-ins, smart:comp 3 is rank S. The ranks run S, A, B and C, and S is the top. Averaging the scores for each criterion (out of 5, with the one criterion that matters most for the purpose counted double) gives 4.5.

Strengths

  • Compression character (4 points): you can choose among several characters of compression to suit the material and your taste.
  • Speed (5 points): automatic aids make it easy to set even if you are not used to compressors.
  • Mix applications (5 points): it has wide mix uses, such as reacting to other sounds and mixing with the original sound.

Who it suits: people who do not yet understand compressor numbers and want to choose settings while watching how the sound changes.

Main features of smart:comp 3

The Compression Matrix: AI shows the range you can use, like a map

smart:comp 3 has AI analyze the sound and display the range of compression settings that suits that material as a “map” (the Compression Matrix). Just by moving a point on the map you can switch smoothly from gentle compression to strong compression. You can choose by ear without understanding the numbers. The official page says it also shows how each knob affects the sound while you work.

Spectral compression that compresses only where needed, by frequency

Spectral Compression compresses only the parts that stick out, frequency by frequency. Because it does not press down the whole sound the way an ordinary compressor does, it is easier to keep a natural sense of dynamics.

External sidechain and Spectral Ducking

According to the manual, it has an external sidechain triggered by another track, and a sidechain EQ that shapes the reaction. With the external sidechain, Spectral Ducking lowers only the frequencies that clash with the trigger sound. For example, you can lower only the guitar frequencies that clash with the vocal, and only while the vocal is singing.

A Group mode for up to seven tracks, and a mode with no delay

In Group mode you can link up to seven instances of smart:comp 3 and adjust threshold, ratio, attack, release and mix together from one screen. It is handy when you want drum parts or several vocals to be compressed alike. A Zero-latency mode with no delay is also available, so it can be used when recording or playing live.

Where it is useful

  • Deciding how to compress a vocal by watching the AI map, even if you are not used to compressor numbers
  • Lowering only the guitar or synth frequencies that clash with the vocal, only while it sings (Spectral Ducking)
  • Compressing every part of a drum kit alike (Group mode)

Rating by criterion

Compression character: 4 / 5

We check whether you can choose the character of the compression, from transparent and natural to colored and vintage-style.

It has three styles (Clean, Smooth and Aggressive), a Custom style where you can shape the attack and release curves and saturation (a faint distortion, as if passed through analog gear), and spectral processing that compresses by frequency.

Speed: 5 / 5

We check whether it has features that get you to a good setting quickly, such as automatic settings and easy presets.

AI analyzes the sound and shows usable compression settings as a map.

Mix applications: 5 / 5

We check whether it supports mix applications such as reacting to another sound (sidechain) and mixing with the original sound (parallel).

It has an external sidechain and sidechain EQ, a Mid-Side mode and a mix control that blends in the original sound. With the external sidechain you can also use Spectral Ducking, which lowers only the clashing frequencies (confirmed in the manual).

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5 on how well the product serves one goal: evening out the volume of a vocal and blending it into the backing track. Scores follow the conditions in the table above, and the rank is based on an average in which "Compression character" counts double. The basis is official manufacturer information. Sound quality and CPU load are not measured, so they are not scored; reviews from trade magazines are introduced in the articles for reference. Price is not part of the score. Features that cannot be confirmed from the manufacturer's or a retailer's description are scored as if absent. The "OBS (streaming)" column in the table shows whether the official page lists the VST2 format that the streaming software OBS Studio can use (○). OBS does not support the VST3 format. It is not part of the score.
