Waves’ CLA-2A is a recreation of an optical tube compressor/limiter based on a unit loved by the mix engineer Chris Lord-Alge. It has a Limiter mode, a Mix knob and a sidechain frequency filter, and it has no delay.

The CLA-2A is a plug-in that recreates an optical compressor/limiter that has been used on vocals, bass, guitar and more for over 50 years. The sales page explains that it is based on a unit Chris Lord-Alge personally likes, and that it sounds natural even when applied strongly.

Tube saturation and a Limiter mode

You can add warm tube-like distortion (saturation). In Limiter mode, the sustain (how long a sound rings) of instruments is said to increase. There is also an option that adds the faint hum and hiss of the real unit.

Mix, Trim and a sidechain filter
