What is Alpha EvoAlpha 50 Evo / 65 Evo / 80 Evo?

Alpha Evo is Focal's active 2-way series in the Alpha Evo line of its professional monitors. It has three models: the 5-inch 50 Evo, the 6.5-inch 65 Evo and the 8-inch 80 Evo, all using Slatefiber woofer cones.

The tweeter is a 1-inch aluminum inverted dome. Focal says the aim is wide dispersion so that the sound character stays similar even if the listening position shifts. It is designed with desktop nearfield use in mind.

All three share XLR, TRS and RCA inputs, a disengageable automatic standby, bass and treble level controls, and mounting inserts for walls and ceilings. They are bass-reflex designs with a large-section laminar vent.

The differences are mainly woofer size and the resulting frequency range, output level, size and weight. You choose by room size and the amount of bass you need. A Sub One subwoofer, sold separately, is part of the same series.

Slatefiber woofers

The 50 Evo uses a 5-inch, the 65 Evo a 6.5-inch and the 80 Evo an 8-inch Slatefiber cone. Focal describes the material as aimed at a neutral sound with low distortion.

Aluminum inverted-dome tweeter

A 1-inch aluminum design aimed at wide dispersion. Focal says it aims to keep the sound consistent even when the listening position shifts.

Three inputs

XLR and TRS (balanced) and RCA (unbalanced) inputs allow up to three audio sources, as noted for the 80 Evo. Handy when connecting an interface and another player.

Dual amplification

Separate class D amplifiers drive the highs and the low/mids (50 Evo: 25 W + 35 W, 65 Evo: 30 W + 55 W, 80 Evo: 35 W + 80 W). Focal says this gives high current capacity.

Auto standby and mounting

Auto standby can be disengaged. Wall and ceiling mounting inserts are provided, with rounded contours and robust side panels.

Level controls

Bass level (below 250 Hz, ±6 dB), treble level (above 4.5 kHz, ±3 dB) and sensitivity are adjustable, useful for reducing bass buildup from desks and walls.
