What is Trio6ST6?

Trio6 is an active studio monitor made for professional use by the French maker Focal. It is a 3-way model in the ST6 line, with an 8-inch subwoofer, a 5-inch woofer and a 1-inch beryllium tweeter in one cabinet. Focal describes the design as focused on transparency, dynamics and sonic precision.

Its main feature is the dual Focus Mode. Besides the normal 3-way operation, it can run as a 2-way (midrange and tweeter) or as a one-way full-range monitor (midrange only), switched with a footswitch. This lets you check whether a mix holds up on smaller speakers or a TV without swapping monitors.

It also has a variable high-pass filter, a 160 Hz parametric filter meant to reduce reflections from the console, and a switchable automatic standby mode. The filtering is fully analog, built so the monitor can be fitted to a room.

The cabinet is thick MDF with internal bracing to limit vibration and the distortion it causes. Focal technologies such as the beryllium tweeter, the W cone and TMD suspension are included. At 25 kg per speaker, it is positioned for people who want to monitor in a room of reasonable size.

3-way design

It has an 8-inch subwoofer, a 5-inch woofer and a 1-inch beryllium inverted-dome tweeter. Focal lists the 3-way response as 35 Hz to 40 kHz (±3 dB), which suits checking the whole range on one speaker.

Dual Focus Mode

It switches between 3-way, 2-way (80 Hz to 20 kHz) and 1-way (100 Hz to 15 kHz) operation with a footswitch. It helps when you want to hear how a mix behaves on smaller speakers.

Beryllium tweeter

The pure beryllium inverted dome covers more than five octaves (1,000 to 40,000 Hz), according to Focal. It may be a candidate for mixing or mastering work where high-frequency detail matters.

W cone and TMD suspension

The woofer and subwoofer use a W sandwich cone, with two glass layers around a foam core. TMD places small weights on the suspension to tame its behavior around 1 to 2 kHz, as Focal explains.

Room-fitting controls

A high-pass filter (full range, 45, 60 or 90 Hz), a 160 Hz bass/midrange control (±3 dB) and bass and treble level controls (±3 dB) are provided. They can be used to adapt to desk reflections and room character.

Rotatable baffle

The aluminum plate holding the tweeter and woofer rotates in 90-degree steps. It supports vertical or horizontal placement and lets the bass driver sit at the center or outside, which gives options even in tighter rooms.

Reinforced cabinet

Thick MDF with internal bracing raises rigidity and damping to limit vibration and distortion, according to Focal. This aims to keep the cabinet itself quiet with such large drivers inside.

What is included and system requirements

  • Trio6 speaker (two are needed for a stereo pair)
  • Input: XLR balanced
  • Controls and indicators: sensitivity, auto standby, HPF / LF shelf / LMF EQ / HF shelf, Focus Mode, LEDs for power, focus mode, clipping, fault and standby
  • Documents on the Focal site: product sheet, user manual, quick start, beryllium instructions

How to use it

  1. Decide where to place the speakers and set the rear baffle orientation (vertical or horizontal, bass driver at center or outside).
  2. Connect your audio interface outputs to the rear of each speaker with balanced XLR cables.
  3. Check that the mains voltage (100-120 V or 220-240 V) matches your region, then switch on.
  4. Adjust the rear sensitivity control to match your interface output level.
  5. If desk or console reflections bother you, use the 160 Hz control and the high-pass filter (45, 60 or 90 Hz).
  6. Use the bass and treble level controls to set the overall balance for your room.
  7. Connect a footswitch and change Focus Mode to compare the mix in 3-way, 2-way and 1-way modes.
  8. Check the auto standby setting, which can be switched, if the speakers stay idle for long periods.

Final mix checks

Besides full-range checking in 3-way mode, Focus Mode lets you hear how the mix behaves on smaller speakers, which may help before finishing.

Mastering-oriented work

The beryllium tweeter covering more than five octaves and the low-end reproduction from 35 Hz may be useful for checking details.

A larger home studio

At 25 kg per speaker it is a substantial monitor and may suit rooms with enough space for nearfield to slightly farther listening.

Video and streaming audio

The midrange-only 1-way mode may help judge balance in a way closer to a TV or phone speaker.

Who it may suit

  • People who want to check quickly whether a mix works on smaller speakers
  • Home or project studio owners wanting one set of 3-way monitors
  • People who want fine adjustment for room reflections and placement
  • People with the budget and space for a larger monitor

Good to know before you buy

  • At 25 kg per speaker, check stand or platform load limits and space.
  • The footswitch for Focus Mode is sold separately.
  • The only input is XLR balanced; there are no RCA or TRS inputs.
  • Focal provides beryllium handling instructions as a document.
