Key points

  • FX Collection 6 is a collection of 39 effects, from basic ones such as EQ and compressors to creative effects that change a sound greatly.
  • The five new ones are Efx AMBIENT, Pitch SHIFTER-910, Bus TRANSIENT, Mix DRUMS and Tape J-37. In the official release, Efx AMBIENT and Pitch SHIFTER-910 are written as “new effects” and the other three as “additions”.
  • The ones that could work on vocals are Pitch SHIFTER-910, which the official page says can be used on vocals, and Efx AMBIENT, which changes the texture of sound.
  • There are two editions with different effects included, “PRO” (39 effects) and “INTRO” (6 effects).
  • 134 new presets have been added to 24 of the effects (per the manufacturer).

The five new effects

Pitch SHIFTER-910: a pitch shifter that can be used on vocals too

The official page presents it as an effect for people making rock and indie music to add grit, harmony and space to vocals, guitars, keyboards and percussion. It is described as a modern interface for a legendary pitch processor (an effect that changes the pitch of a sound).

  • It has two pitch shifter engines, vintage and modern.
  • It has dedicated sections for “pitch shift” and “delay”.
  • Switching the screen to “Advanced” shows the settings for “Voice Mode” (Unison, Detune, Spread) and vibrato (Amount, Speed, Humaniser).

The official release material says that a classic technique was to use two of the same unit panned hard left and right and slightly offset, and that Voice Mode’s “dual mono” makes this easy. It can be used on things other than vocals as well.

Efx AMBIENT: a dreamy effect that changes the texture of sound

The official page explains that it is an effect that “creates moving textures”, with six modes and macros (knobs that move several things together). The screen is split into “Tone” (the part that changes the sound itself) and “Space” (the reverberation of the space), and you can change the balance between the two. You can also turn Space all the way down and use only Tone.

  • Six modes: the screen shows Reflect, Woven, Siren, Organist, Codec and Sunken.
  • You can explore settings by moving the XY pad in the center. In the factory presets, horizontal is Space and vertical is Tone (per the manufacturer). Recording your moves and using them as automation is introduced.
  • The pitch-changing engine differs by mode. Woven, Reflect and Sunken are granular, and Codec, Siren and Organist use frequency analysis (FFT), it is explained.

Bus TRANSIENT, Mix DRUMS and Tape J-37

  • Bus TRANSIENT: a transient shaper that adjusts the start of a sound (attack) and its extension (sustain). It can adjust by frequency, multiband, and has a display that shows the state of the sound and clipping-tone adjustment. The official page lists uses such as tightening drums and adding impact to a mix.
  • Mix DRUMS: an effect that increases the punch and perceived loudness of drums while keeping the peaks. It is described as made with the mixing engineer Emre Ramazanoglu. It has an “Auto Set” button that sets the input automatically.
  • Tape J-37: an effect modeled on the Studer J37 tape machine. It has four colors, and is explained as usable to add a light tape texture to the master, or to apply harmonic distortion on a bus or a single track.

PRO and INTRO: two editions

According to the official page, FX Collection 6 has two editions.

  • FX Collection 6 PRO: the full edition with 39 effects. It has more than 1,500 presets and all five new effects.
  • FX Collection 6 INTRO: an entry edition narrowed to six effects. It has more than 500 presets and one new effect (Mix DRUMS). It includes Rev PLATE-140, Efx FRAGMENTS, Mix DRUMS, Tape MELLO-FI, Efx MOTIONS and Delay TAPE-201.

For both editions, the official page has information on offers for owners of other products (crossgrades and updates). Check the conditions and prices on the official page.

Where they could fit in a cover-song mix

From here on, these are examples of use based on the official description.

  • When you want to add grit or a harmony-like thickness to a vocal: Pitch SHIFTER-910 is an effect the official page says can be used on vocals. With Voice Mode you can spread slightly offset sounds left and right. Adding too much tends to sound unnatural, so it may be better to try it little by little.
  • When you want to wrap a vocal’s world softly: Efx AMBIENT changes a sound into another texture. You can also turn Space down and use only Tone.
  • When you want to tighten the drums of the backing track: Bus TRANSIENT and Mix DRUMS are effects made for drums.
  • When you want to add a light tape texture at the end: using Tape J-37 for a light texture on the master is introduced.

What to check before you buy

  • System requirements: the official download page says “Mac OS 11.0 or later” for Mac and “Windows 10 or later” for Windows. The plug-in formats listed are VST and Audio Unit. Check on the official page that it loads in the DAW you use.
  • Choosing the edition: check on the official list whether the effects you want are among the six in INTRO.
  • Overlap with effects you already have: basic effects such as EQ and compressors may overlap with ones you already own. Comparisons by genre are in the comparison pages for reverb, saturation, creative effects and others.
