Waves CLA-76 Compressor / Limiter plug-in: features and spec-based rating

Waves’ CLA-76 is an FET compressor based on the two 1176s (nicknamed Bluey and Blacky) owned by the engineer Chris Lord-Alge. It has preamp distortion, an ALL ratio mode and a mix knob.

The CLA-76 is a Waves compressor based on the two 1176s (nicknamed Bluey and Blacky) treasured by the mix engineer Chris Lord-Alge. The sales page highlights very fast reaction and tube-like distortion, different from the smoothness of optical compressors. You can choose either of the two units to change the tone.

The ALL mode for heavy squashing, and preamp distortion

It has an ALL mode, which gives strong compression as if every ratio button were pressed, and a recreation of preamp distortion, which suit an aggressive sound. With a fast attack it can also hold down the start of a drum hit.

Processing with no delay, and a Mix knob

Because it processes with no delay, it can be used when recording or playing live. The Mix knob makes parallel compression easy, and Trim lets you match levels quickly. Presets by Chris Lord-Alge are also included.
